Misc. Technical Discussion / Re: Tyre Sizes, Tubes & Choices (Tires)
« Last post by dogshome on June 20, 2026, 08:08:00 AM »
I'm on my second set of Conti classic attack. The 120 is too wide. You get about 1mm of clearance if you are lucky. Also, if it goes flat, turning the wheel (i.e. when pushing) is almost impossible. Getting it out of the swingarm is also a royal pain. FD off is easier.

110 Fitted now and that has a sensible clearance. Also using tubes.

Oh, the Contis are very robust. They handle really well, wet weather making no difference. I laugh at white lines and ridges. But they are tough to fit, long 14/16" levers required, and will need plenty of proper lube and a blast up to 100PSI to make them pop onto the rim. Yes, a lot more than Conti advise.

Misc. Technical Discussion / Re: Fuel Filter Choices?
« Last post by dogshome on June 20, 2026, 08:00:08 AM »
Definitely an inline filter. The one in the tank is a plastic moulding. It filters boulders, icebergs, that kind of thing  :D

Be careful with very cheap filters, the design sometimes doesn't have the filter element completely sealed. Fuel just runs past it. You'll see by looking at it. The big one in your pic is s good one.

Not sure about the little one, although it does look pretty.

Misc. Technical Discussion / Fuel Filter Choices?
« Last post by Loan Rider on June 18, 2026, 12:32:54 PM »
I'm curious as to how many people rely on the standard fuel filters built into the tap and use just a fuel line as shown here, and how many add an inline fuel filter as shown resting next to the carb in this photo?

BMW Technical Q&A, Primarily R65 / Re: Rubber bushing
« Last post by Tiedie on June 14, 2026, 06:25:25 PM »
Welp I stopped looking for those rubber bushings, my vintage guy went to work and asked the lead BMW tech and he had some spacers that fit perfectly and donated them to the cause. It seems to have less vibration since these were put in and the 860 kit. Ordered some Rhinomoto bar end mirror mounts for my CRG mirrors so we'll see how that helps my hand buzzing.
Ride safe.

Brought her home today  I'll know more tomorrow rained on my ride home.
New/Old valve clearances are set to .15 Intake and .20 Exhaust and I will check in 1500 miles around 47000 miles on odo. Fresh Valvoline VR1 20W-50 Racing & classic cars, all fluids rechecked. New to me exhaust silencers sound better than the rusting ones. Washed her up from that crappy rain storm.
This has been a great journey!

Looking good. I'm not sure about the absolute values, 30bhp sound low for a stock engine, but the relative change is what counts.

If 30 is accurate, it explains why I was comparing my 650 to a modern 250/300!

BMW Technical Q&A, Primarily R65 / Old style lock cylinder wafer replacement
« Last post by Paul H. on June 13, 2026, 10:16:56 AM »
The side cases on my R65 came without the case to bike latch locks. I got a couple of new 51252303680 locks with different keys and was able to press the wafers out but can not figure out how to get them back in. I have enough wafers that I can code them to the old key if I can get them back together. They don't just drop in like the newer cylinders. Any help much appreciated. Thanks Paul

Ok break in period is over  valves tightened up too much during break in so we set back to intake.15 and exhaust .20 I'll check in about 1500 miles. If they do it again I might go a little bit looser.
Here's the last Dyno run picture still holding onto the 50hp mark.
Also the 140 main jets are good not running lean I'll be able to tell when I get her home and smell gas or just regular gas smell.
This has been an adventure.
Finding the guy to do all the PM work and fix everything that someone else did wrong or worse was the best decision for me.
Jake had all the tools and know how along with another guy and his father there to guide him if he needed. I trusted him to get the work done and done right. I had lots of trusted riding buddies recommend him so that sealed the deal. He was fair in prices and didn't recommend anything or try to just get the 1 thing done and hand it off. He would get in touch with me and let me know what he found and sent me pictures. When it was done he gave me all the old worn out parts and didn't just toss them out.
If you live in or close to WNC I can and will recommend Halls Custom Vintage to get your stuff up and ready to ride. He had it over the winter but he does have a full time job at a BMW motorcycle dealership and a family.
It's fast and fun.
Next up powder coating the wheels and ceramic coat the exhaust headers. But that's down the road maybe next winter.
Hope everyone enjoyed my adventure and if you have any questions that I can help you with just let me know.
Ride safe.

What clearance are you setting the valve gap at ??
Good morning Bob, so the valves tightened up substantially. The intake went to .10 from .15 and the exhaust went to .15 from .20, so we reset them to the .15 intake and .20 exhaust I'll check them in 1500 miles and report back then. Here's a picture of the Dyno run holding onto the 50hp.
Waiting until Sunday to pick up because it's going to rain all week and he's getting those washers for the crash bar since it's basically impossible to get those vibration bushings, unless you fabricated them on your own or bought them from MCmaster- Carr.

We started with the  recommended .15 intake and .20 exhaust. He's checking to see if either of those closed up within the 600 mile break in period. He said he's going to check the clearances and either set to .10 and .20 or if they tightened up run .15 and .25 possibly. In any case I can let you know more Monday what set at.
After their set he's checking out the main jets and switch between 142 or 140 it's been running lean. I've gotten 38 and 39 mpg during the break in period.
