Misc. Technical Discussion / Re: Fuel Filter Choices?
« Last post by Bob_Roller on June 23, 2026, 11:41:50 AM »
I've been using an inline filter for about 40 years .
When I removed the float bowls, I always found a few globs of water and fine gritty sediment .
I currently use a pleated paper element filter, Visufilter 8437-03-9909 . .
If you start using an inline filter be aware that it could be too restrictive .
On the first few various filters I started using, I developed a high speed miss after 15 minutes of  highway speeds .

You should increase to 32 front and 35 rear. It will be much more stable over 50 and in the wet.

I've put a few hundred miles on the Conti Classic Attacks now, albeit only dry miles to date. 110/90 R18 on the rear Snowflake fits fine as you say. And actually easier to get in/out past the rear brake than the 20+ year old 4.00x18 that it replaced.

I've got tyre pressures set to 30psi front and rear, with rear springs on the centre setting. I've nothing to compare it with as I bought the bike as a non-runner (stood 20 years, neglected before that) project, but I'm pleasantly surprised at how agile it feels. It really is good fun to ride. How much of that is native to the R65, and how much is down to the tyres, I have no idea. But either way it brings a smile to my face every time I ride it, and it encourages people to stop and chat about their classic bikes as well.

I'm on my second set of Conti classic attack. The 120 is too wide. You get about 1mm of clearance if you are lucky. Also, if it goes flat, turning the wheel (i.e. when pushing) is almost impossible. Getting it out of the swingarm is also a royal pain. FD off is easier.

110 Fitted now and that has a sensible clearance. Also using tubes.

Oh, the Contis are very robust. They handle really well, wet weather making no difference. I laugh at white lines and ridges. But they are tough to fit, long 14/16" levers required, and will need plenty of proper lube and a blast up to 100PSI to make them pop onto the rim. Yes, a lot more than Conti advise.

Definitely an inline filter. The one in the tank is a plastic moulding. It filters boulders, icebergs, that kind of thing  :D

Be careful with very cheap filters, the design sometimes doesn't have the filter element completely sealed. Fuel just runs past it. You'll see by looking at it. The big one in your pic is s good one.

Not sure about the little one, although it does look pretty.

I'm curious as to how many people rely on the standard fuel filters built into the tap and use just a fuel line as shown here, and how many add an inline fuel filter as shown resting next to the carb in this photo?

BMW Technical Q&A, Primarily R65 / Re: Rubber bushing
« Last post by Tiedie on June 14, 2026, 06:25:25 PM »
Welp I stopped looking for those rubber bushings, my vintage guy went to work and asked the lead BMW tech and he had some spacers that fit perfectly and donated them to the cause. It seems to have less vibration since these were put in and the 860 kit. Ordered some Rhinomoto bar end mirror mounts for my CRG mirrors so we'll see how that helps my hand buzzing.
Ride safe.

Brought her home today  I'll know more tomorrow rained on my ride home.
New/Old valve clearances are set to .15 Intake and .20 Exhaust and I will check in 1500 miles around 47000 miles on odo. Fresh Valvoline VR1 20W-50 Racing & classic cars, all fluids rechecked. New to me exhaust silencers sound better than the rusting ones. Washed her up from that crappy rain storm.
This has been a great journey!
Ride safe
