Fun!  I frequently wish mine was cafe'd, but it's too close to stock to screw up.

My future son-in-law bought a 70's Trump chop on Feepay last year. After seeing pics of my old Nortons he has been trying in vain for some help with it. Just looking at it makes my leg hurt.

Cool.

I'm afraid I have imprinted on the BSA so the Triumph is lost on me.  But have fun.  I would Keep the hard tail and put a really log girder fork on the front but that is just me.

The OIF frame is actually a really good frame!!  It is a copy of the Trackmaster racing frame period 1970.  The down tubes are bigger (stiffer) that frame tubes on the Norton Commandos and the massive center tube down the pine of the bike really adds to rigidity.  In otherwords it handles really well.  On the back of my 1971 Thunderbolt I held my own up in the North Georgia mountains with two late model BMW a Ninja 1000 and an MV1000.  One person was amazed at how fast I was on that "old" bike with drum brakes and stock Dunlop K70s.

Right hand shift too! I've got one of those old bolt on hard tail frames too. Keep meaning to do something with it.

Hey Rich that's a "Bobber" with a 1968 or 1969 TLS front brake.  Cool.   When you going to finish it?  8-)

well my r65 is off ready for paint so its time to play with this little gem.

the engine turned into alittle more than i hoped but thats ok.

the frame has been traded and a new swingarm and front end are in order. the swingarm is a 92 ex500 ninja swingarm that needed some adjustments to use but those where easy.

the front end is from a zx 7 and that will take a little more to make work but again not real bad.

Cool !

I know alot of the 'purists' rather despised the oil-in-frame model chassis but it really is a much stiffer and better handling frame for putting Ninja parts onto it !

I don't know if it is true, but I had heard that the OIF was built for the BSAs, and then Triumph ended up taking the frame from them to put on the Bonneville.
Getting the taller Bonnie engine to fit was a bit of a squeak.

Hi Jon,

Looks like the original "Dove Grey".  What color did you use (Incase I decide to do a total resto on the '71 Tbolt.)  Time for some spacers on the swing arm.

I have a 1971 Triumph frame modified to take an XS650 engine. The seat tubes have been narrowed and the rear hoop shortened and kicked up a bit too.I also have a bare XS650 engine....but that's about all, apart for some odds and sods like a seamless slimline tank, solo pad seat.I intend to make a streettracker out of it,but it's a project that will take a long, long time. However,I know where there is a complete 1972 rolling frame minus engine...that would shorted the build time by a decade. The rolling frame has been offered to me.....I just need to sell another bike to fund it.

Much as I'd like a Trumpy - I can't realistically see it happening....though one of my cousins did - 'til he had it pinched - last seen heading up the freeway towards Victoria going hell for leather  >:( ....

However (and I maybe preaching to the converted) here is a slightly different take that I think is quite cool..it's based on a Kwaka W650. From memory they're going for about A$23, 000....

the dove grey is just that, i had got it from work. we get some super size air bombs and there is enough there to do a frame. we dont use it and it was sitting on the selve forever and i asked the owner if i could buy a can. he told me to take what i want.

10 years for this build? i am planning on having this done enough to ride by the end of april.  it might not be perfect, i would like to tear down the rims and clean them up but i know i wont have enough time to do that.

i am making the neck this weekend. i picked up a piece of 2.5 x .25 wall tubing for the neck. i have to chuck it up on the lathe and cut out a little for the races to fit in for the neck bearings. once i have the neck done the rest of the frame will come together pretty quick.

i also got a different ex500 swing arm. the first one i had i am going to keep with that oif frame. i was given another oif frame that the had a big crack in the backbone seat tube down by the crossmember. it was welded a bunch of times and looked like chicken scratching so no one wanted it. i cut out the backbone and the rear cross member. the new frame section will be 1 x 2 x .083 req. tubing

here is a more updated pix

and yep, gonna be a mono with a usd front end. i had to make a new neck for it. man its been a while since i had to get that close with a lathe. that neck i am pretty darn proud of. took me three trys to get it right but its done. the rest of the frame will come faster now i have the neck done.

going for a seely/north style frame but with more modern parts hanging on it other than the engine. going to try my hand at making a alum. tank for the petro and oil also along with a alum. seat pan cowl like a cafe seat.

Good freaking grief.  Going from an OIF back to a oil tank, and all.  Do you have formulas to go by for the steering head angle/wheel base/anything else I don't know about?  How the heck do you get all that done?

On a different note, is there an advantage to using the rectangular outline tubing as opposed to round like the factories used?

I'm impressed.
