Thinking about getting a screen.

Maybe something like the Givi A210

Anyone tried one of these or similar, Height above top of headlight is 36.5 cm

Or there's this possibility...

Rather a sporty look for the R65. There are Euro as well as American dealers. Just search the main website.

I mounted a German MRA screen on my Triumph Trophy. With the lip at the top of the slightly higher screen, buffeting for rider and passenger is greatly reduced as is the crosswind component.

Excellent quality with these screens. Not exactly cheap.

Thanks guys

The Trophy is a great bike Monte, love them

What I liked about the Givi is its not too small so might give some protection without being too much, also good price and can pick one up local.

On the other hand, now that you have got me looking at MRA,  the MRA vario screens are supposed to be great and actually do not look so bad in these pics from my friend at BMW Bayer:

Its similar in price to the Givi A31 that Bali has (by the time you add a mounting bracket to that one), i.e pricey, but if its as effective as many say maybe worth it.

I liked the standard BMW screen on my 1100RS when I had that, but the buffeting at certain speeds could get annoying and that's something I want to avoid, which I guess is what the vario design aims to reduce.

OK, so I decide the MRA Vario was a bit too high tech / modern for my R65, so ruled it out, I considered the R 65 R CLASSIC from MRA that Monte saw, but (from what I could tell) the slightly higher height and simpler fitting, price and availability swung me to the Givi A210.

As I know we like pictures, ;), here are some.

Test ride and opinions to follow

Hi RSMike
I see you have a Galway reg plate, did you buy the bike from there? I lived at Friars Hill for a couple of years in the early 90's, Galway is a very special place.
My wife's family are all based in Templmore, home of the Gardai!

Hi Chris,
Its a UK bike orig, imported to Ireland (Galway) in 1991 , it had 3 further owners in Galway up to 2006, when it moved next door to County Clare, which is where I acquired it from.

So it was probably buzzing around Galway around the same time you were there in the 90's,  8-)

Cheers

Mike

But yes Galway is a nice spot

Mike by the photo it looks as if the Givi screen fits on the headlamp mount bolts and nowhere else, is that correct? (That is, no handlebar clamps?)

Yes, very easy fitting, ideally the adjustable bracket either side should go inside the headlamp clamps, but I ended up putting them outside the clamps, (as per first photo on this thread from motorworks), they are brushed SS so look OK.

The reason they are better outside is the one thing the screen contacts on the instrument binnacle is the trip meter zero'ing thingy, I even added a couple of extra washers inside the screen brackets to avoid putting too much pressure on the zero'ing thingy.

OK, test report.

With screens there are (at least) 4 variables, screen height, screen angle, seat height and rider height.

That's why its not often easy to get an ideal setting.

Obviously the height and angle are interlinked on this and most screens, i.e. highest screen angle = highest screen height (pushed forward position), lowest angle = lowest screen position pulled back position.

Luckily with this screen on the R65, the full range of adjustment is available.

Seat height is obviously fixed on the R65, as is rider height ,though the latter is a very important consideration, i.e. what suits me may very well not suit you.

So bottom line with this screen the only position that works for me is the most pulled back position, any further forward and I start to get whistling noises above 40mph, and in the most forward position, I get severe helmet shaking turbulence, I'm a shorty (5' 7").

With the screen in the pulled back position my helmet is "just" in clear air, A bit disappointing (but not surprising), I was hoping I might have the option to use in the most forward position & ride with helmet visor (shield) up, but at least there is a position that works and it also looks best in this position.

One other variable of course is bar height, (I'm told mine are higher than standard).

Thanks Mike, I've found it on Givi website. There's a dealer near here. Regarding your other post on fuel hoses, I could not understand why your layout was so neat while mine was such a spaghetti, took me a while looking at your photo before the penny dropped: some PO had installed the T-piece the wrong way round. Easy. All done now, but sometimes I think my brain is getting a bit scrambled these days!

Scotty, that does look very nice indeed, has more of a fairing look, I imagine you are well protected behind that?

Do you have some sort of padding behind the screen (around the headlight) ?

No ....no padding...there is a slight space between windshield and headlight all the way around...just enough to get the tip of your little finger in between them. So, they do not rub or rattle. Here is another angle shot.
