Will I need extended brake lines????
« on: February 20, 2013, 03:19:15 AM »
As you may have read, I'm a newbie owner of an R65LS. I'm going to fit new braided brake hoses asap because thats what I do as a matter of course - but I *may* fit RT bars in the future (or maybe a mid rise Renthal) so I don't want to buy a set of std length hoses if they won't be suitable for the higher bars - does anyone know if extended lines will be necessary to fit RT bars, and if so will R80RT spec hoses fit? I know I'll need to extend the electric cables to do this.

Many thanks

You will need longer lines, unless higher (standard) bars have been installed on your LS .

You need to determine that first .

Hello !
Maybe not...
IRC there is a brake line splitter behind the headlight. From this there is one line going to the master cylinder at the handlebar.
IMHO, this last one should be longer if the handlebar is changed. So as it is the shortest and only one line, you may be able to buy a short one for today and a longer one when, and if, you change the handlebar...
Or, if it's state is not too bad, change the two going to the callipers today and keep the old one until you change the handlebar...

Plus, you may need to factor in a longer clutch cable and, possibly, extended throttle cables for those higher bars.

As I was corrected, you will need to replace the brake line from the master cylinder, to the splitter .

The upper throttle and choke cables, I know need to changed and possibly the clutch cable as well .

+1 on the above.   I swapped my US-spec "tall" R65LS bars (which are still shorter/lower than the RT bars by a smidge) for the Euro-spec "low" bars.  In the process, I had to change out the upper throttle, upper choke (these are single lines that go into a union/splitter gizmo under the fuel tank on the north american models - I assume that yours is the same here), the clutch cable, and the upper brake line to the splitter.   In my case, going from tall->short, I could technically have kept the upper choke, and possibly the upper throttle cable the same, but there was alot of excess, and I'd have had the splitter things shoved way back over the airbox, so I swapped those as well.

Some folks find that swapping for the mid-rise handlebar of the K75C model is a decent compromise, in between too tall and too low.

Thanks for all the replies. I reckon its too much work/expense for the benefit so I guess the best option is the K75C bars which apparently don't need any hose/cable mods. Good thing I didn't pay much for the RT bars!   ;D

The other thing to consider is replacing the standard brake line arrangement and used Banjo bolts and two new stainless hoses.  The first running directly from the master cylinder to the right hand caliper and the second running from the right hand calipr to the left, looped over the mudguard.  You will need two standard Banjo bolts, one for the left caliper and one for the master cylinder.  And a double for the right hand caliper.

I saw this arrangement on a Suzuki GSXR750, its what gave me the idea.  I had to replace my old pipes any way and wanted to simplify the front end.

Of course, if you have a 79, you will lose your front brake light pressure switch. But this will not be an MOT failure as long as you rear brake light switch works

I did this with my Cafe Racer, before I went to a single disk setup, I just kept the long pipe then.

Cheers

I changed mine for a more comfortable riding position after abdominal surgery Motorworks will match the brake line to the bars for you
these are the half rise barscorrection these are the RT Bars.

Made an error, they are the "RT" bars from Motorworks not the Half rise i still have the receipt.no need to alter the electrics there is spare cable in the Loom under the tank (BMW think of everything)

;D even better! I picked up an RT handlebar a few weeks ago on the offchance, as it was for sale at... £7 !

I've since found out there is a lot of work involved in fitting it - longer clutch & accelerator cables, longer electrical cables, plus a longer reservoir to splitter hose, so I'm going to try and use the std bars for a few weeks to see how I get on... but I reckon I'll be fitting the higher bars eventually as they suit my 'touring' riding style better.

Thanks for the pic - it confirms that I have actually bought the right item for a change!

I have just gone and done a similar thing wu=ith my Cafe Racer - it now is not - it has RT bars.

Took a couple of days to chop the wires and extend them, re-route the new throttle and clutch cables and change the brake line.

Just waiting for my new saddle........
