Both my Dobermans ( Dobermen??) were inoculated about 2 years ago when this epidemic first started. booster shots have followed. There are 2 major problems however:
1. There are various animals rights groups here that seem to be run by Australian Lesbians or people who wear sandals with socks. They have, somehow, managed to persuade the local government that inoculation is better that termination. There are assumed to be 600,000 dogs on this island, most of them strays, or not very well maintained animals. The Aussie government donated 200,000 doses of rabies treatment ( for humans, post bite) but you can only buy it at certain pharmacies! ( i.e, A Govt. bureaucrat sold it to the pharmacies).
2. There are also lots of monkeys on this island. As they are considered sacred, they cannot be captured and inoculated, due to their status.
As usual in Indonesia, the entire affair has been totally mismanaged but along with Dengue Fever, HIV- Aids, Cerebral malaria and MC accident deaths ( now up to 4 fatalities per day) There wont be anyone left here by 2015! ( year, not time).
Some of my clients had serious problems with monkeys but I solved that with a liberal sprinkling of Tiger Poo around the property perimeters.
My own solution for rabid animals is my trusty blowgun and an alkaloid substance from the sap of the UPAH tree. Takes about 20 seconds for a local dog to shuffle off this mortal coil after a neck shot. It may sound a bit extreme but after having contracted typhus and dengue this year, I will shoot ANYTHING that appears to be a threat.
So far, 100 people have died this year from rabies.
