How are you and yours doing with the rabies that I heard about on BBC the other day?

No problems, I hope!

Both my Dobermans ( Dobermen??) were inoculated about 2 years ago when this epidemic first started. booster shots have followed. There are 2 major problems however:
1. There are various animals rights groups here that seem to be run by Australian Lesbians or people who wear sandals with socks. They have, somehow, managed to persuade the local government that inoculation is better that termination. There are assumed to be 600,000 dogs on this island, most of them strays, or not very well maintained animals. The Aussie government donated 200,000 doses of rabies treatment ( for humans, post bite) but you can only buy it at certain pharmacies! ( i.e, A Govt. bureaucrat sold it to the pharmacies).
2. There are also lots of monkeys on this island. As they are considered sacred, they cannot be captured and inoculated, due to their status.

As usual in Indonesia, the entire affair has been totally mismanaged but along with Dengue Fever, HIV- Aids, Cerebral malaria and MC accident deaths ( now up to 4 fatalities per day) There wont be anyone left here by 2015! ( year, not time).

Some of my clients had serious problems with monkeys but I solved that with a liberal sprinkling of Tiger Poo around the property perimeters.

My own solution for rabid animals is my trusty blowgun and an alkaloid substance from the sap of the UPAH tree. Takes about 20 seconds for a local dog to shuffle off this mortal coil after a neck shot. It may sound a bit extreme but after having contracted typhus and dengue this year, I will shoot ANYTHING that appears to be a threat.

So far, 100 people have died this year from rabies.

I understand that dogs are not "appreciated" in the same way in Bali as they are in most parts of North America - here they are pretty much part of the family.  At least that was part of what I heard on that broadcast.  And that has resulted in many free-roaming animals breeding at will.
Too bad, and that is a neat trick with the blow-gun.  And you "load your own".
Just be careful and don't inhale when you should exhale!  (I guess you hear that one all the time!)

there are times when i wonder what world the snivel libertarian lives in.
Sometimes they make sense and other times theyre straight out of a Monty python skit.

During the Katherine flood in 1998, the town ended up with an abundance of camp dogs looking ofr food. Basically stray dogs that live in and around Aboriginal communities but not looked after by anyone. Usually ridden with mange and ticks.
There was about 50 dogs stranded by the floods on top of Woolworths supermarket. But no camp dogs got shot only diseased animals. Because that would have caused a political and cultural issue. Funny though there was not many camp dogs left when the waters subsided.

Rob - The Balinese believe that dogs are the reincarnations of bad people (So I guess that means lawyers, politicians etc.) consequently, dogs are not treated well and are actually used as blood sacrifices at cremations. Despite what a lot of Balinese will tell you, they DO eat dog, mainly in the form of satays ( grilled, marinaded meat on a bamboo skewer)

Q: How many Balinese does it take to eat a dog?
A: 3 ;  1 to do the eating and 2 to watch out for traffic!

That's too bad.  It is much more convenient when Hell is not shared with us "living" folk!

And I never understood the whole blood sacrifice thing.  Too much peyote or psilocybin, maybe...

As far as eating dog goes, I say why not?  We eat pretty much everything else on this planet.

Another point - As a security guy, I have been contacted (more than once) by expats here that have had their dogs kidnapped. This is done for 3 reasons:
1. Extortion ( The Balinese know that expats have a soft spot for their pets)
2. Dog farming ( Import of dogs is prohibited, and all recognised breeds have to have an ID card)
3. Food
I am thinking of adding a new skill to my CV. That being "CHR" ( Canine Hostage Recovery)

And while we are on the subject of animal welfare in Bali, follow this link:

It is not an isolated case, but it is ALWAYS cows. It is not fair on the pigs, goats, sheep, horses or ducks that cows seem to have the monopoly!

That be some freaky chit going on!
Actually drowning the cow?  I hope they ate it, so it didn't go to waste!
The feast could have been part of his "re-virginizing" process! ;)

They needn't have drowned the cow - Just send it to west Sumatra where the Tsunami wiuld have taken care of it. The teenager could have gone to Merapi Volcano for an earth shaking experience! sometimes, I actually feel sorry for the people in this country!
