California Rain
« on: January 19, 2010, 06:44:06 PM »
How are the California members faring with the soon to be torrential rain fall there ?

The 'rain event' has just started here in the Phoenix area around 1530 local .

Some forecasts here are predicting 3 inches (76mm) of rain by the time this is over with sometime Friday night/Saturday morning .

Our average rain totals for a year, are 6-7 inches (152-178 mm) .

Winter storm/blizzard warnings are up for the higher elevations north and east of Phoenix .

Forecasts are predicting 3+ feet (1+m) of snow, and that's only 130 miles (210km) away, as the crow flies .

Should be an interesting week .

Looks like the bikes will be parked for 4-5 days or so .

Soon to be...?  The second storm in the series is just finishing up here; the next one comes in tomorrow.  We've had brief (fortunately!) power outages the last couple days; just had a hail storm.  I think we've had more than 4" of rain since yesterday.

The weather prevaricators are saying that we'll have a break over the weekend, then more rain all next week.

That's the first rain total I've seen today!!!

Residents in the wildfire burn area north of LA, have gotten evacuation orders, mudslides have started .

Gotten about .5 inches of rain since 1530 here in Phoenix, predicting an additional inch, before morning .

The cacti are partying hard here in the northern Sonoran desert, this is their first real drink of water in 6-7 months .

More coming your way Bob!!!  Pretty exciting here in San Diego today with violent wind gusts reaching +70 mph. I think we're in the neighbrhood of 3" the past two days with the heavy stuff coming  Wednesday night through Thursday.

Gotta love those desert rains out your way huh Bob? Spent a few years working in Sierra Vista back in the 80's where I experienced some gorgeous high desert downpours.  The desert seems to come alive after a little watering.

The third storm is here, NOW.  It's blowing hard and raining sideways.

The NWS says we got 2-2.5" yesterday, with a few areas on the Big Sur and Sonoma coasts getting up to 5".  The last seven days map shows we've received 4-5" total.

I live in a rural area up in the hills, and the local utility, PG&E, has spent a lot of time here this fall trimming trees and clearing the power lines.  So far, it has paid off for us.

The wildflowers will be quite a sight this spring, if we get all the rain that is forecast .

Only down side, is that when all the vegetation dries up in June, it will be ripe for wildfires !!!!!!!!

Thanks to all you guys out west.  We're going to get your rain this afternoon and it pushes into Texas.  Come April we should have a bumpercrop of wildflowers in this state.  Some of you ought to plan on coming down this way for some riding.  Mrs. Phorqs and I always take a Spring Wildflower ride in mid to late April down around the Hill Country.  Bandera is a good stepping off point.

In the meantime, keep your leathers dry!

B_P,

True. I always run through the Hill country and stay at Deb's place (D'Rose) on my way to Bulverde to stop at my cousins place before heading East. Except for Western Texas and the gawd awful desert, Texas has some incredible roads, scenery and people. I've grown to love the trek left to right through that big state.  Also our stop in Lockhart for some of the best BBQ anywhere.

Mike, the d'Rose is for sale.

And don't be raggin' on West Texas too hard. The Big Bend area and the Rio Grande roads are lightly traveled and a treat on two or four wheels. But, yes, it can get a little warm..

Received 1.25 inches (32mm) of rain yesterday .

Ground is finally softened up, so I planted a couple of cacti this afternoon after work .

Forecast through Saturday morning, is 2 inches (51mm) of additional rain .

Was clear this morning, so I did get to ride the oil head into work today .

A "LITTLE" warm Monty?! No disrespect intended, I actually enjoy Van Horn and the scenery in that area, everything you need there, gas, stores, eateries and Motels. Besides, after leaving Van Horn I know I'm almost there (Hill Country) to cool off. Best part of the West Texas Desert are the early morning starts before sunrise after those late evening summer rain storms..quite nice.

Deb backed out of selling the D'Rose, for the time being. She needs some help with that place, she works way too hard all by herself. She's a great gal.

Looks like today is going to be an 'interesting' day .

The governmental authority that operates Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, announced that no aircraft will arrive, or depart after 1400 local due to high winds, that's the first time in the 17 years I've been here, that the airport is going to be closed before 'heavy' weather actually arrives .

My employer Southwest Airlines, is getting all aircraft out of Phoenix by that time, and anticipates the airport to be closed for the remainder of the day .

Only time they pull all aircraft out of a city, is when a hurricane approaches .

We just learned that one of our aircraft ran off a runway in San Diego in high winds, no one injured, but the plane got 'banged up' a bit .

Seems ironic to me that a plane that can travel hundreds of miles per hour got banged up in high winds.  Hope everyone was OK, it hasn't made CNN yet.  That calls to mind the time I was on a SW flight out of Love heading for New Orleans.  We weren't 2 minutes in the air when we had to turn around and go back.  Seems that one of the ground crew had forgotten to close a cockpit window and the crew couldn't pressurize the cabin.  Stuff happens sometimes!

Nothing but blue skies and mild weather in N. Texas today.  Sure wish I was out riding somewhere, like down around Leakey on the Threes.

It's been decent here, warm and rainy, but we almost never get as much rain at one time as some of you get.  This morning I rode all the way to work and it didn't rain on me at all!  THAT'S how good my Olympia Phantom suit is.    ;D

Bob,
Interesting for sure. Batten down the hatches, we're getting hit pretty hard at the moment here in San Diego with wind gusts, +20' waves and heavy rain, with the strongest still out over the Pacific. A record low in Barometric Pressure of ±29.3 in.  Perfect conditions for a tornado and funnel clouds. I haven't heard about the aircraft situation, are you talking about Lindbergh?

Good day to test rain gear.
