There is an Italian firm who sell rotors only on fleabay at an almost reasonable price.

An Australian firm "Metalgear" make a superb rotor, but they are profiteers, charging more than double for BMW kit over what they charge for rotors for other makes.

Anyone with a lathe, a drill and indexing chuck and a blanchard grinder or surface sander could make rotors for you - this will work providing their hourly rate is not too high, there is over an hour's work in making a replica of BMW's rotor,, about 35 minutes if you will accept solid rotors and somewhere in between if the person making them has a mill and cuts slots instead of drilling holes in the rotor face. If this is even remotely an option for you, let me know and I'll post photos of my self made cast iron rotors.

If I was doing this today I'd use stainless steel, probably by adapting a rotor from something else and removing metal as required. If you want I can also post a photo of a replacement rotor I made in a really big hurry about 30 years ago - about to head off on a big ride and noticed that the rear rotor on the R100 was cracked. I adapted a RD400 rotor in about 45 minutes and it worked perfectly - with pre-worn pads, If I had taken more time I would have thinned it up a bit so that new pads would have fitted, but I was in a hurry.....

I got a pair of EBC disks on my LS. The only problem is they are expensive with a capital F but work a treat.

Thanks for the feedback guys.  Looks like ~$230 is what I'll expect for new.  Was hoping to find a cheaper alternative.  I've seen a few used ones on ebay, but am hesitant on those.

I wish I had machining friends, but that's not an option for me.  I think I'll just have to bite the bullet and buy a new one.  What kind of life should I expect out of a new rotor?

Put an ad here in the "trading post".  You'd be surprised at what the members have lurking in their garages...............

"What kind of life should I expect out of a new rotor?"

That depends how many miles you put on and the style of riding. I do little riding in town and have replaced one disc in my life and that was because it was pulsing. Some of the folks here are commuters and put lots more hard miles on and would have probably worn out a few rotors.

Expect shorter rotor life if you install metallic brake pads. EBC organic pads will do the job and treat the discs with care.

Before you put down money for a new disk, go to this website:
www.truedisk.net. Tom Tokarz is in Michigan USA. I sent him my disc and he resurfaced it beautifully. He will measure your disk and as long as it is within spec, he can resurface it.  It is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than investing in a new rotor.

If by chance your rotors are beyond resurfacing, here's an alternative .

They remove the old rotor and put a semi -floating stainless rotor  on, they are rebuildable .

Keep looking. I put EBC organics on the twin ATEs on my R100S. I'll look for the receipt and post up soonest. Grandkids in the house...
