Last weekend pickup a 82 r65ls with 19500miles! I have an old 72 Honda and a 2013 600 sport bike. The Beemer puts as big if not bigger smile on my face! What a great bike. Have been reading the tech. posts and learning lots. I know I will have lots of questions, hopefully not all stupid! See you guys on the road.

Welcome.

The only stupid question is the un-asked one.

I don't know about that Tony. I asked my ex if she wanted to get married. That was a stupid question that should have stayed un-asked!  :D

Welcome to the asylum Oconner!
Keep your bike in good repair: motorcycle boots are not comfortable for walking.

The question wasn't the problem. It's what you did with the answer

Your LS appears to be a totally unmolested bike which is a rare find indeed. Amazing and with such low mileage.

Noted the earlier ATE brake calipers on your twin disc model. Seem BMW Motorrad was using up the parts bin inventory prior to the switch over to Brembo calipers. My '81 and '83 R65s both have Brembos but with the usual NA import's single front disc.

An important maintenance item is proper lubrication of the final drive and transmission/clutch spline gears. Honda MolyLube is your friend. That and a good shop manual: Haynes, Clymer or both. The manuals detail what services are recommended and their mileage intervals.

The Airheads are relatively simple motorcycles and easy to maintain. Corrosion of wire terminals and connections is common.

Welcome aboard. We're all pretty much friendly fire 'round here.

Monte I think I recognize you in the picture! HA. THanks for the advice. Already have the Haynes. Going to be doing all the lubing and oils soon. From what I gather the bike is pretty much all orig. The only thing different the PO put different bars on, which make the throttle stick. I will do a new post regarding this and possible solutions, pic's etc.

Thanks Everyone!

BMW requires 22mm diameter handlebars. Some folks will fit the more common 7/8" bars and end up with a situation like yours. Over-tighten the lever perch on a 7/8" and you will very likely break the perch. The Flanders Co offers many 22mm bars for BMWs. Check 'em out here: http://www.flandersco.com/index.html

"Monte I think I recognize you in the picture!"  Yeah, I get that a lot. Nurse Ratched is always on my case.

You guys need used Airhead parts, look up Larry Stonestreet "Stoner's Stash" at most any SoCal ABC Tech Day.

Suggest you look over the Airheads Beemers Facebook page. Start here:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/airheadsbeemer/?fref=nf

The actual Airheads Beemer Club (ABC) of which I was a member for several years, is a dues payable "club' that's going through some challenging times. Struggling with prior leadership issues and membership has been dropping steadily. Time will tell if the ABC organization will remain viable or not.
