Can you tell me, should there be a lift out tool tray in that area under the seat, above the battery?

Yes you should have a tool tray, probably a bit much to expect the factory tools to still be there though. New tool trays can still be had from motobins.co.uk amongst others.
On the topic of Motobins, by the fact that you bought one, you must be planning to do your own maintenance and (at least) minor spannering. You will quickly discover that whilst they are pleasant people, the people who bought Don Wilson's old workshop have a rather expensive view of what their parts are worth. Similarly the only other major BMW airhead workshop, Munich Motors in Perth are equally expensive and use the world's slowest courier service to send stuff to you (although they charge for a premium service). The BM Workshop in Brisbane is a good place to check for 2nd hand parts, but airhead bits are getting rarer.
So, back to Motobins who have provided a consistent and reasonably priced parts, both genuine and pattern for a very long time, I ahve been buying from them since the middle 80s and they were well established then.
eBay, used cautiously is also a good place for parts (I'll bet you can find a parts tray there today) there are a number of German sellers who provide good prices and DHL provide very reasonable postage rates - for example it cost me only $88 to have a front rim (less tyre and discs) posted to me and it took only 9 days to arrive at my post office, the purchase price was about $AUS80. Compare to the Sydney wrecker who wanted $250 for the rim and $80 to post it to me. By way of comparison, I did in fact buy a broken Tacho from that wrecker and I paid for it the same day as I paid for the rim discussed above - the rim beat the Tacho to Cairns.
