Don't stop yet! What you in the US call a transmission, we call a gearbox. What we call a transmission is everything between the engine and the driven wheel - clutch, differential etc.  So what do you call a gearbox? Been wondering for years.

Transmission is the most common term, but some people use gearbox .

Everything from the back of the engine to the rear wheels, is commonly referred to as the drivetrain .

Here a transmission is an auto, gearbox a manual - as in automatic transmission, and manual gearbox.

There are still some references of a standard transmission, a manual shifted gearbox/transmission, a throw back to the era when a manual transmission was standard on a vehicle and an automatic was an option .

I've never owned a vehicle with an automatic , the last time I drove one on the street, was a rental vehicle about 14 years ago, I was a 'fish out of water' in that vehicle .

A manually shifted transmission/gearbox, is a great deterrent to people asking to borrow your vehicle .

The last time anyone asked to drive one of my vehicles was about 10 years ago, a female friend was thinking of purchasing a BMW Z3, she asked if she could drive mine , I handed her the keys and got in the passengers seat .

The look on her face when she finally realized that it was a manual transmission, made my day !!!

There's a group of auto dealers about 2 miles from my home, they have just about every make represented there .

A coworker got a great deal on certified pre owned  2 year old Mercedes .

I went into the M-B dealer and looked at the pre owned vehicles they had .

A sales man approached me and asked if he help me .

My first question was, does M-B make any passenger vehicles with a manual transmission ?

His response was, "sir these are luxury automobiles, not 'farm implements' "

I couldn't stop laughing, the salesman got a bit defensive and inquired what was so funny .

My response was ,'that's exactly what Adolf Hitler thought of BMW motorcycles in WWII' !!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are good reasons why most all MB's are auto. One is they used to make lousy manual boxes and also because they have a foot operated parking brake that makes hill starts with a manual box into a bit of a farce. My 190e is very unusual for a Merc in have a proper handbrake on the transmission tunnel.

My C200 was a Manual as my wife wont drive an auto, it used to p*ss me off every time it went in for service/repair despite ordering a manual the courtesy car was nearly always an auto at which point i gave them the choice find what i ordered or i go to a MB dealer who will.... to add to my frustration this was the first car with the Infra Red security/locking system which was always failing i was back at the dealers every month, when the warranty ran out i bought a BMW.

The 190e has been virtually faultless which is why I've kept it for 20 years. Mercedes quality and reliability went down hill fast from the mid nineties. It may well have come back up again now but I doubt it would be almost fault free for 20 years given the level of complexity. It matters not as I can no longer afford one.

I generally use the same terms you guys do, thanks to having to look up the different sections in my shop manual for my '70 Bonneville.
