Picking up Britta today....
« on: April 23, 2011, 06:31:09 AM »
Well, Me and the Missus are driving up to Winston-Salem this morning to NC Steve's place.  Britta will be put back in my care for a short time while I go about finding a good home for her.  Steve has to "thin the herd" a bit, to make room for his latest retirement toy, a 2007 Honda ST1300.  I won't be able to hang on the Britta for very long, either.  I purchased a 2003 BMW R1200CLC yesterday and pick it up on Easter Sunday.  Because of space limitations, I can only have one bike.   :(

I'll post an ad for Britta soon, here and the IBMWR Marketplace, as well as the BMWMOA Flea Market.  If anyone knows someone who would like a VERY well cared for R65, please let me know!

Glad to hear that you'll be back inthe saddle again this year, John!

Don't underestimate Britta's ability to convince you to build a little paddock for her on your back lawn, either!  ;)

All good news and I hope someone here will get Britta as she has become family too! They do have those fold up and over tarp type garages ya know! No orphanage for Britta!

Hope to be able to see you sometime John! Is the National in Pa. too much for a start-back year?
1983 R65LS - LRB still my favourite!? 1988 Honda NX250, "Toodles Too" and a Suzuki DR650, "Calypso." All stored in the "Brrrmmm Closet".

Well, John and the Missus just pulled away, leaving me R65less once again. We discussed him selling Britta, he really has no room to keep her, and I told him I'd try to help find her a good new home. Just thought I'd put a bit of info here while he travels home, so here goes.

In the last 1000 miles, Britta has received:

New Hagon rear shocks.
New Bridgestone Spitfire tires.
A Reynolds Ride-Off centerstand, to compliment the Brown's Sidestand.
A Russell Daylong Saddle, with the stock seat also included, and separate rear cowlings for both.
A very hard to find new-in-bag Mustang fuel tank cover. I scoured the earth for this one, other members can testify!
Carbs rebuilt, full tuneup with valve adjustment, new plugs, clutch adjustment, etc.

A low mileage rear drive was added appx 20K ago also.
Britta also has full hard cases and racks, with locks and keys, and a Reynolds folding rear luggage rack. Large National Cycle windshield, also a key for the fork lock. Oh, and a rebuilt and accurate speedometer from Palo Alto BMW. Documentation and receipts for all work and parts has been kept.

On the less than stellar side, the old girl does have 143K on the clock. John had the top end rebuild and a new clutch added around 25K ago, and with excellent regular maintenance she runs strong, no smoke, and uses no oil. No leaks or funny noises.
It might not be a bad idea to think about new brake pads and shoes, they stop fine but the rear is nearly out of adjustment.
All lights, switches, etc work great, except for the neutral indicator. I got used to that quickly as you can feel when the bike is in neutral, although it should be fixed at some point. A small relay behind the left side cover has gone out.
That's pretty much it.

I'm sure John will have more to add later, and he plans to include a few pics too for those unfamiliar with Britta. For a quick, clean sale, he is asking $1800 or best offer, which is a total steal, guaranteed.  :o
If interested, please PM or email John, or me, if you need info or have other questions.
Thanks.

I made it back home to sunny SC safe and sound, after about 5 hours in the saddle.  I found out just how out of condition I was, too!  My hands, arms, and shoulders were very sore from keeping them in the "riding" position all afternoon.  But the important thing was that Britta performed flawlessly, ran like a proverbial top from the time I left Steve's driveway until I pulled up in our driveway.  This bike will make some lucky rider very, very happy!   ;)

Yeah, I hunted for a while and it was really hard finding one.
That is until I paid too much on Ebay and another popped up the next day for about half the price! They sure make life alot easier though,
Reynolds should made them for every Eurobike!

Well, it was a bittersweet day today, as I loaded up Britta on to a pickup truck to be taken away to Summerville.  A guy had called me Thursday to inquire about the bike.  A friend of his who lives in Hong Kong had seen the Craig's List ad and called his buddy in Summerville and asked him to check the bike out and buy it.  He intends to do a frame-up restoration on Britta and make her look like she did in 1984!  Britta will remain in Summerville for this guy to ride when he visits his friend.

I'm sad to have to say goodbye to Britta, but I am encouraged in that she will be given even more attention than I could give, and she will be pampered and loved by her new owner.

"Tschuss, Britta!"    [smiley=sad.gif]

Something is just not right about a Beemer in the back of a pickup truck.  Though that show I got mine home the first time.
