Hi again everybody.It's been a while since my last visit here.still have and ride everyday my beloved r65.
 I am thinkin of gettin a second airhead.there is one on the local CL.What do you think guys?is it worth it?

I suppose you can't expect perfection at that price but it looks a touch untidy and uncared for and they are always worse than the photograph.

Obvious details:-
Carbs are not original - should be CV's, side panels missing, seat not original, Engine badges missing. Add the speedo and headlight and the $$$ are going to add up. On the plus side looks like the under tank master cylinder has been replaced with a handlebar mounted system.

At least, with a /6, a 1976 model would be the best one to get, IMO.

And it has the incorrect valve covers (/7 covers on there, not the /6 peanut type) and it appears that they've got them on wrong, or else it is the angle of the pics.   The horizontal fins on the /7 and later valve covers should be , well, horizontal and aligned with the exhaust spigot with the bike sitting on its wheels.   Might need new valve cover gaskets.

The issue with nonworking speedo/tach is that tends to make one disbelieve that it was working well & roadworthy.   I know some ride without a tach (fine)  and some wannabes ride without an speedometers, but it does seem like someone's project that they never got round to finishing.

The handlebar m/c is a good upgrade, IMO,  even with retaining the older swinging caliper ATE brakes.

If I wanted a project, I might offer as much as $2K for it IF it impressed me when inspected in person, but if I didn't want to do some wrenching and throwing another $1K into it, well, I'd keep on moving myself.

At least go look at it in person, SinCity. Find out if the seller is hurting for money by engaging him in casual conversation. You could dress down a little and arrive in some sorta beater to give the impression you also are a bit short on cash.

These type deals can be either a true heap or a bike that just needs some love. Start up the R90 and if the owner won't permit you to take it around the block, at least try the gearbox and count gears, feel the clutch action, squeeze the brakes and let the bike pull against 'em... all that stuff.

If you can, put your top dollar cash offer in the pocket of your jeans, No billfold, just a wad of cash. With the words, "This is all I can afford," offer the money. I have bought quite a bit of "stuff" using this po'boy technique. I can see Crenshaw nodding his head and laughing... Maybe keep one extra C-note in the other pocket but no more. SinCity must control the negotiation.

If it really is a heap, well, the buying technique can be buffed and utilized again. Distress sales should be distressful only for the seller.

A man after my own heart Monte. It is all about the negotiations.

I used to work per call IT jobs and covered the entire north side of Atlanta. On slow days I would drive my old truck and hit the used car sales at the dealerships. I would spend a couple of hours "doing the dance" with the salesman to see what kind of deal I could make. Great learning experience.

Feel guilty not buying one? Not really. They would have stuck it to me given half a chance but I definitely learned the tricks.
Keep your bike in good repair: motorcycle boots are not comfortable for walking.

Looks like it's worth $2K if it runs out well and needs nothing other than already mentioned. Does need some work to tidy up, but the dual discs are a BIG plus, along with new tires, bar mount master, luggage. and other extras. These bikes are beginning to be collectable, so now's the time to get one. Prices are going up.

Pretend you're looking over your R65... Check for the usual suspects:

• Weeping push rod tube seals
• Leaky, drippy neutral switch in bottom of trans case
• oil drips on final drive
• Overall oil-tight condition of engine joints
• Electrical items functional, horn, signals, brake light, etc
• Fork seals blowing fluid

Shoot, you know the drill, Sin. This ain't your first rodeo. ;D

Monte when i bought my r65 was love from first sight.well,the owner does not answer his phone.maybe for good.anyway is a 100k too much for a 97 r1100rt with all service records.it looks in a really great shape
