Can these shaft driven cycles be push started without causing damage?

You bet they can! Le Mans starts are fun.

Before I redid the diode board and swapped in a solid state voltage regulator on my '81 R65, I got pretty good at the run n' bump drill. Third gear worked best for me.

The problem is the alternator -charging system doesn't kick in a charge to the battery until 2-3K rpm. If you putt around town with mucho stop and go, you'll drain the battery in a couple days, max.

A Battery Tender[size=9]®[/size] kept plugged in will eliminate the issue or just keep the revs up and, as one of our members was so aptly advised, "don't ride like a wuss." ;D

Yep, I tried the top gear and that wasn't much help.  I agree, I too found 3rd to be the right mix, after some trial and error.  Also, removing the cases helped greatly.   ;)

Yes, I've noticed that its a marginal charging system.  I've been using the tach. to stay in the 3-4 K range (thanks to a member or two here).  That seems to be a nice balance for suburban riding.

It gets stored in a cargo trailer.  I have to look into getting a solar panel for the roof.  I bet I can find a way to trickle charge from that...

By the way, I normally don't store it with the centerstand down.  Harbor Freight had a pivot chock that I bolted down.

If you have a bike with electronic ignition, with a low voltage condition of the battery, the ignition will most likely not work .

Below around 9 volts, the solid state components aren't working very well, if at all .

Yes, thanks, good to know.  I had jumped it first to get it going, but then I had to shut it down.  When I went to restart I made a bump start effort that worked.  

When I first got it I was riding every day, but then soon slacked off to where I now  notice the issue is more pronounced.  I will have to move back to AZ where I can ride nearly everyday.  Look out. :P
