/7 Seat
« on: July 03, 2011, 09:36:03 AM »
Purist's may not approve but to replace my badly corroded  brown seat, I went with a new /7 black seat, it meant losing the cowl but I find the grab rail is handy with bungy cord for carrying stuff. The seat is nice and firm and quite comfortable.

I still have the old seat and cowl and will look into restoring.

It looks real good, did you have to alter the hinge mounting points and seat lock pin ?

No, though I struggled with it for a while, and thought the lock pin was the problem, but actually it was the rear fender, I had to lower the fender slightly with washers ( steel and rubber, see below).
I also had to trim a piece off the rim of the little box that sits over the battery, then it worked fine.

Though when the seat first arrived (http://www.bmwbayer.de/Seat-with-rail-/7-models-cross-stamping-cover.html), I was really scratching my head, it turned out they had sent the wrong seat ( a /6), but once that was established they sorted it out pretty quickly.

PS:The white BMW roundel does not come on the seat, I did that myself using a stencil sourced on ebay.

Very nice, and a good price also. [smiley=tekst-toppie.gif]

I think I'll check out the ebay stencil.

I think I'll check out the ebay stencil.

Here is a the ebay link for the guy in Italy who does the stencils:
http://cgi.ebay.ie/BMW-R-90-65-45-stencil-seat-sitzbank-/120745793584

I got a very fast delivery from him ( under a week), He supplies two stencils which is handy if you mess up on the first attempt, I did by trying to use a permanent ink marker first time (stupid idea, but I found out quickly)

Second time I used a rattle can spray with a good few light coats to build up. Use lots of masking to cover all of th erest of the seat and anything else in the vicinity.

As the instructions say, have a blade handy to help peeling the stencil from the backing, The middle holes in the BMW "B" are guaranteed to come free and you will need to position with the blade.

But all in all, not too difficult.

Looks great, I recently painted my bike black, not thinking about the seat, it looks kind of funky, but I will try dying it, as someone here suggested, it's in perfect condition, just...well.... brown.

I too have bought i identical seat for my R65 1981.
It will not fit even if I lower the rear fender. My rear sub-frame has i different part number than a 1980, do somebody know if it is only the number which is different? I really like the look of the old seats.

For the moment I use a comfort-seat from Motorworks.
Which fits OK.

Hi, I hope they did not send you a /6 seat, as that was what happened when I ordered from BMW Bayer, I had to send it back to get it changed for a /7 seat.

The /6 seat is a couple of inches longer and hangs out over the tail light which prevents it from seating properly. (pic attached)
The bayer part no. on the underside of the /6 seat was 5253061

The /7 seat is shorter and should just barely clear the tail light.

I don't think there should be any difference between the 1980 and 81 rear sub-frame, so would be surprised if this is the problem.

If you are having trouble getting the hinges under the frame, there is a knack, slide the front hinge under the frame first and then maneuver the rear hinge under the frame with the seat in the down position, once both hinges are under the frame open it up to locate the hinge onto the pins.

It looks like your /7 seat. And the sticker is marked with /7 seat.
May be it has got the wrong sticker.
Some day I have to take of my comfort seat and check this out.
I bought the seat nearly a year ago, it is a little too late to complain to Bayer.
