Orange peel

Painters in the group will know what that is. I'm about to purposely destroy a new lacquer clear coat with some 2000 grit in the hopes I can buff it back out. Any suggestions on polishing compound(s) for the owner of a random orbit buffer?

I'll have to look in my garage - I think that I had a can of Simonize or Turtle Wax brand buffing compound that worked OK

Let us know how it turns out.  The 2000 grit may be all you need.

On lacquer I would knock down the high spots with 600 then finish with 800.  Or, skip the 800 altogether.  Buff with 3M Imperial Micro Fine...

Some 2000 grit used with a foam sanding block took it down pretty well. I was chicken to make it all flat so there is still a slight imperfection here and there. I took the low cost route and used some Turtle wax rubbing compound and my el cheapo Sears buffer. Damn! came out really good. I'll be taking a junk tank down off the shelf next for some more practice. I think I'm getting hooked on this painting stuff. At least as long as it's a simple one color finish for now.

I'm just doing a side cover on a silver R65 that came primed. Have a pretty good paint match and now I'm starting to think of freshening up the LS. Drop by if you have a mind to and I'll show ya what I did with limited funds.

What did you finally come up with for a paint number for the imola silver ?

I used a supplier that does not deal in Glasrut paint. they also seemed unable to match the BASF formula [060 imola silver] when I handed it to them. So It was a session out in the sunlight matching chips to the cover. From the supplier in Mesa I came up with a MA072.10 in BASFs LIMCO line. A nice silver metallic that is perhaps a slight bit more smoky and a touch more flake than stock but a very close match. I do or did have the BASF formula printed out and for a second go of it I'm going to try "The Paint Library" in Phoenix as they are listed as a Glasrut supplier. If you are contemplating a repaint of the LS this may help

The Mesa store does sell the RM line of paint but were baffled by the formula I gave them right from the BASF web site. It was a disappointing exercise with them as their grand store gave me high expectations.
