Hey all... I bought a 1981 R65 awhile back and it came with a smoked Cafe' style screen. It didn't do anything but direct the wind right into my chest and face. I had the bug problem also...I might as well have been riding the bike naked. The only advantage I could see having it was to keep the rain off my speedo and tach and it was also nice on those 90 degree days. I wear a protective jacket ALL the time because I'm a Paramedic that's seen too many unprotected riders get seriously injured (which is another arguement that could go on forever).
Anyways...I purchased a full windshield and love the protection. It's adjustable, takes 10 seconds, to lower and raise so I can vary it for more breeze or less. I'll attempt to attach a poor photo I have (it's in storage right now) because it's 8 degrees out and we've had 38" of snow so far. My riding will have to wait til spring.
Tell me what you think....
Bill

After trying "nekkid" and another larger screen, I settled on a small Givi on my '84 R65. Aida (Ms Buck) runs the same model on her bike.

It did just what I needed, took the blast off my chest and left my head in a clean air stream.
Looked good too, if I may say so myself.  ;)

Very nice Steve like the colour  is GIVI  a brand name ??.Do you think it will work with the high bars?

Yes Lou, Givi is the brand name, made in Italy. They also make hard & soft luggage, etc. This particular screen is their model A750, and they can often be found used on Ebay for a reasonable price. Here's a link to the screen section of their site.

My R65 had the standard high bars, as does Aida's, and the screen fit just fine. It's also somewhat angle adjustable. Here's a couple more pics. I just got lucky on the color, as it was a very close match to the blue already on the bike.

Bill, that windshield fairing you bought looks like one by JC Whitney that I bought for my Britta!  I love it!  Does an outstanding job!  I allowed my to ride my bike all winter long, too.  (But in SC, that usually isn't all that difficult!)   ::)

Bill i was considering a GIVI A240 looks good and the same time it does not affect the original look of the bike

The reason I put the full screen on that I chose was because I can literally take it off in 10 seconds if I choose...and yet it's a great add-on for protection and a wind break. It also extends beyond the handle bars and protects your hands...keeps em' a bit warmer.

Thats a lurverly 65 Lou...
As for screens, its open to interpretation I suppose.
I`ve just removed my Vetter Windjammer V from the R65 to clean it up and boy do I feel it`s absence.

The Vetter really IS a fairing of distinction and it WORKS.
Ok,its pushing the envelope of the R65 a tad but the virtual total protection from the elements is fantabulastic.

I`m now using a BMW K series full windscreen which is very effective at what it does, whilst possibly looking a bit dated ?

Either way, both of these devices allow for Open Face Helmet or Visor Up riding...I`d find it very hard to return to naked bicycling again .

Mr Smart, did your Windjammer have the lowers?  I agree, my SS works great but I still want to be able to convert back and forth for when I have to ride my R65 in the summer.  That's when I hate my Windjammer.

Yes indeed Ed,it does have the lowers which I tend to leave on throughout the year.

Here in Ireland we tend to regard any temperature above 20C as Summer and even in the midst of that blistering heat it could rain at a seconds notice.

I`m hoping to give the Windjammer a bit of a Spring Clean before refitting it and its good to see that Vetters are still making parts for their products.

Oh, Ireland.  I missed that.  For a while I had two weather stickers on my home page, one Dublin, one my place.  The weather was pretty similar through the winter.  If anything, Ireland was a bit more likely to get some sunshine.  But when summer came, the weather in Ireland didn't change very much.  :-)
