To Screen or not To Screen

Thinking of adding this to my Christmas wish list its slightly smoked and comes with chrome mounts in stock at my local bike shop !
what do you think ?? yea or neah will Santa get it down my chimney.

Personally I like screens for wind and rain protection. However they can cause buffeting at highter speeds (75+mph) and the bike will sound differently to you because they bounce the sound around. I try to adjust the height so I am looking over the top rather than through the screen. the wind over the top can hit you anywhere between the chest and top of the helmet. On my R1100R the wind hit right at eye level which was disturbing - I got a Laminar Lip which raised the airstream to the top of my helmet.
The screen looks good to me - others may have different opinions.

Lou, I have a small Spitfire screen on the R90, and while it's a bit of a snug fit on the short bars, it works just fine.  Had the bike out last night on the freeway and I don't experience any buffetting or excess noise.  It's about neck high in a riding position.

Put one of those little guys on and a nice BMW rondel low and center will really make it look sharp.

Yes, 'ol Bengt Mike was out romping the roads on his R90 thanks to yours truly saving him a couple "C" notes" for Bing rebuild kits... And he teases me about my choice of beer. Jeez.

I dunno know, Lou. Some days, I wish that the wind would stop thrashing me on the naked R65s and then on other days I actually surf the bikes for sale sites for a faired BMW airhead for long distance cruising.

I love riding naked. It's a much more popular bike style in Europe than the US of A.

I have been thinking about a windshield.................. maybe that last wasp I hit did it. The little beggar went right into the gap between my coat and helmet. Rather than let him keep poking around for my jugular vein......... I grabbed him..got stung twice on the finger before I could get rid of him.
Then there was the mass migration of snout nosed butterflies I went through. I lowed the butterfly population by a few thousand. Thought I never would get that jacket clean. In the summer time I like to ride without a jacket....a bug or rock flung by a tire hurts at 60 miles an hour. I gave up style for comfort a long time ago. So, I say .......if its make the ride more comfortable.....go for it. Never had a windshield but before the bugs wake up in the Spring.......think I will.

BTW Scotty i have a habit of riding with my visor up in urban areas at lower speeds i was just breaking out into open country doing about 45 as i lowered the visor and reaching for the handlebar a monster bee hit right between the eyes....i almost had a heart attack had to stop to clean the visor there was honey(same colour anyway) allover

I fitted a second hand fairing to my R65 which keeps the wind off my chest .... but the buffeting around my head made me remove the damn thing after a month.

It looks pretty nice on the bike - if it were me, I think that I'd keep it.
It is small enough to be fairly unobtrusive and has a nice shape.  The key factor will be can you adjust the angle/height of it to keep the wind off your chest (looks likely) without the redirected airstream causing unpleasant helmet buffetting (maybe).    While my LS is basically a naked bike, I have ridden 600+ miles days on it.  While that is do-able, it is alot more tiring than when having even a smallish screen to take some of the air resistance out of the equation.

I have seen this kit in the flesh and am getting one for xmas for the R100 - the r65 cafe racer will stay naked for now.  I have my paint brush at the ready, and plenty of Orange left over from last years paint session.

It says theres a "mod" required for the r65 whats that about steve ?/ im an leaning towards the Universal rather than a RS style at the moment though.......I think the slight smoke colour goes well with the paint job.

Until I get the mounting kit I wont really be able to tell you.  However I suspect it has something to do with the top fork yoke , being a peice of stamped steel on an R60/75/80/90/100 and a decent alloy item on the R65.  I suspect I will be taking the fork tops off again to mount it.

You will need a pair of stalks for the indicator lights and to fit those it will be necessary to pull the forks down and out from the top yoke. To fasten the fairing to the top yoke use an rigthtangled bracket to connect the small upper rods from the fairing to the yoke.

The headlight opening in the fairing is bigger than the headlight of the r65. I used an old innertube from a wheelbarrow wheel as a gasket, which worked fine both  aesthetically  and as wind and wind stopper.

IMHO the only fairing worth anything in the climate we are sharing in Yorkshire and Denmark is an RS-fairing with a high shield.

Hey Lou,

It all depends on where the boundry layer coming off the edge of your screen hits you.  If turbulent flow hits your helmet then it will make a racket to make you deaf.  So try it.  It may just work or it may be the worst thing ever.  It al depends on how tall you are and the flow off the screen.  If you don't believe this then if you have a racket in your helmet lean forward till your helmet just about touches the top edge of the screen .  You will be amazed at how quiet things will get.  When you pull back and the flow starts to mix (get turbulent) you will hear the noise getting louder and louder....

It may just be a matter of getting the right angle on the screen so that the flow hits you just below the helmet taking the pressure off your chest and leaving the helmet in smooth non turbulent air.

I'd say keep it around. Semper is right..the whole windshield rake thing is critical and very personal. After I destroyed LRB's National Cycle Deflector X  screen, Aïda found a replacement for me!! LRB has this plus I added a laminar lip recently to that. Now I have to remember to put in the earplugs because it is so quiet now and I can hear the engine again and me singing! The very same laminar lip which was heated to match Aïda's windscreen curvature just happens to fit the windscreen my brother gave me which is now on the Bonnie. Same thing..quiet..so quiet.
I love a screen for the protection. Now the noise isn't so bad I love them more. BUT a naked bike ride is pretty nice on a nice day. I also rigged up some plexiglass "wings" that attach to either the mirror stalks or the National Cycle's supports depending upon what you have there.

P.S. Laminar Lips are designed specifically for a certain model. I bought the one for the R65LS. The fellow was so surprised he actually phoned me to make sure I hadn't made a mistake in ordering. I knew it probably would be wrong curvature but I also knew my friend Ian could heat it and shape it fine as he had made his own windscreen! MacGyver!
