motorcycle lift

I bought a used lift off Craiglist today and was wondering if anyone has used it on thier R65. It has 2 flat lift points about 2" wide. I was thinking of making some brackets to lift at the frame tubing. Could I lift it from the oil pan?

I do't think I'd lift it by the oil pan, the bike is about 425 pounds .

I got part way through making a fixture, that would go over the engine mount studs, thick angle iron, then have that mate up to rectangular tubes, below the oil pan .

Then lift the fixture with a motorcycle jack .

Never got around to finishing it .

If it is like the one that I bought @ Sears years ago, one can easily put some thin boards or short section of 2x4 so that the platform section is liftin it by the bottom of the frame tubes.   Tillie spent 4 months on the lift one time.   DO USE A TIE DOWN STRAP TO MAKE SURE THE BIKE DOESN'T END UP TIPPING OFF THE LIFT.

OK thanks people. I too plan on having it on the lift for the winter while I do some tiding up to the frame paint etc...
I can weld up something.  NHMaf as you know its just about time to put them away. As soon as they put down some salt I won't ride anymore until spring.
Thanks

These small frame lifts scare the beegeebers outta me!  The only time I lift my bike/s is on a full table lift with a front wheel "capture" and tie downs on each side. Please be careful. If it begins to fall, let it go. You can be seriously injured trying to catch a 450+ pound (or more) motorcycle.     Monte

I bought my hydraulic lift at Harbor Freight and have never looked back.  I had the R65 on it for several months, and it wasn't tippy at all.  I've even had my Moto Guzzi on it.  As long as I position it correctly on the lower frame tubes it isn't a problem for me.

The wheelbase and stance on my Sears-brand lift is quite wide, even though the bike is higher off the ground, with the bike properly positioned on there and safety strap on it so it doesn't tip on the platform, it is very stable - actually it would be easier to tip the bike over when it is on its centerstand.
