Good day all!  Aldo here in southern NJ. I'm about to mail a deposit for a '79 R65. The bike is located in Virginia owned by a fellow named Mark; not sure if he's been on this site. I forgot to ask him.  Anyway, I love to ride and share stories and such with other riders. I'm not a 'wrench', but I do change my own oil(s) and filter(s) and can tighten a nut or bolt, if needed.  Anyhow, thanks in advance for your support, encouragement and words of wisdom and humor.  It's been a long week and my brain is fading fast.. I'll check to see if anyone was around and wanted to say 'hi', in the morning.  Good night all, Aldo  :)

Welcome Aldo,

Congrats on our upcoming purchase of an R65.

I'm sure that you will be posting here a bit, as these bikes are getting on up in years, and require a bit of work to keep them in reliable condition.

But they are a sweet ride on the back roads !

I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

Welcome, Aldo !

There are a number of folks who have the 79-80 model year bikes on this forum - they are quite similar but do have some
differences from the 81-84 model year bikes, so you will be able to get plenty of info/help here.   good luck with getting the
'new' bike !

Welcome aboard Aldo.  Happy for your good luck in finding an R65.  Post pictures when you can.  We always enjoy seeing each other's bikes.  No matter what shape they're in when you get it.
Best, Ed

Congrats on the future purchase!  You should get a lot out of this friendly bunch.  You might even discover the 'wrencher' in you as you spend time with your new R65.  It can actually be very satisfying when you tackle something that seems way too over your head and make it work!  Just ask a few of us here on the forum and we will attest to it.  These bikes are really easy to work on and even better to ride!  Hope you have some great rides and share them with us when you do.   8-)

There was a fairly detailed discussion thread on one of the beemer sites a few months ago about "Kegelarsch", a.k.a. Ernst Henne. I'm impressed that aldonj found Henne's photo for his avatar. BTW, the club patch of a South Carolina BMW group is an embroidered Kegelarsch.

Aldo, welcome! I'm curious -- where in Virginia is the seller located? I'm in Fairfax (outside DC), and I've seen one or two R65s at a distance in the area, though I haven't been able to meet the riders. The dealers in my area have sold four or five (including the '81 that I have) in the past year or so, but so far no one has checked into the local group with one.

FWIW, Noemi Berry, who has/had an R65 web site, has a page dedicated to the differences between the '79-80 models and the '81-84s. You probably can find it with a search engine.

Have a great ride(?) home from Virginia!

John

Kegel Arsch = Cone Butt.  Not sure how often that phrase can be inserted into casual conversation, but every time you learn a new phrase, you should try to use it.  I know I will try to use it at least once today (turn 40 today, so will need to try something new to keep from feeling old!)

[My potential apology in advance. Can't find my long-unused German-English Dictionary at the moment. Might have to do an update later to correct the record.]

Correct, though the web article states that it's a "loose" translation.

What's interesting is that the ambiguity involves the noun "Kegel". Though standing alone, "Kegel" translates as "cone," when used in a compound noun it becomes considerably more ambiguous. For example, the German game of bowling (at least in the area -- the Tauber Valley near Wertheim -- where I lived in the 1970s) is called Kegeln. The pins are tall, skinny, and tapered on each end (though not conical), similar to Candlepins, a version of bowling that used to be popular in certain parts of the USA. The German word for "bowling alley?"  Kegelbahn, of course.

Hmmm.  While I can see "Kegel" being used in the sense of "cone" in this context, I can also see a kind of double entendre in its bowling-pin meaning, making "Kegelarsch" humorous in a different (and definitely inappropriate for social conversation) way.
