My R65 is baaacck...
« on: April 05, 2007, 10:11:13 PM »
..from Boxerworks.  New valves, guides, springs, wrist pin bushings and rod bearings.  Also got the pushrod tube rings welded so that they will hold against the seals and not leak!!

Nathan said my exhaust valves were sharp enough to shave with so I guess I caught it in time and avoided a Joan catastrophy.

Time to ride again!!!!!   ;D

So far - NO LEAKS!!!!!!  and its quiet.  I'm going to ride it tonight...just because!

Greetings from Late winter Atlanta GA - 40 degrees and falling.....

I had my valves and seats replaced 9 years ago. I have the dreaded '81 model year that was prone to valve face plastic deformation, a technical term for rapid valve face wear. It started out as a timing chain replacement, progressed into exhaust thread repair, and when I got the heads off and looked at the exhaust valves, about 80 % of the valve face was worn away. The shop that did the overhaul was San Jose BMW, and they said that at best I had 5,000 miles before the exhaust  valves would have failed. I guess it's one of those areas that needs investigating if you have a high mileage R65.

I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

Bill, you're gonna amazed as how it runs now!  My '81 R100 also had valves you could shave with at 75k miles and the difference after a valve job was remarkable!  Well, the different rings might also have had somethingto do with it...

For all of you out there like me who are afraid of doing long journies on their R65's because something might break..look at Bill's long journey last year and his valves must have been pretty close to being wasted then..nothing happened to him!! So....is it the luck of the Irish or the strength of the machine?
1983 R65LS - LRB still my favourite!? 1988 Honda NX250, "Toodles Too" and a Suzuki DR650, "Calypso." All stored in the "Brrrmmm Closet".
