system cases keys?
« on: March 19, 2007, 09:09:40 PM »
just bought a "CL special". case keys are missing.  do the system cases have a universal key, or a limited number of options?
looks like a simple "luggage" key.

sorry, seller's pic taken on their new phone... i don't usually have sideways pix.

Most likely a limited number of standard keys.  I have never looked at these but the Krauser bags have a number on the part the key actually sticks into which can be used to order a pre-cut key.  There are several folks on here with these cases so they can tell you for sure...  I got the keys for some old Krausers from Bob's BMW for $3-$4 each after supplying the number...

Rob, can you help him out with where to look for the key numbers on his Touring bags?

The latches have a small black cover that you have to lift to access the key hole.  I think the 3 digit key code is there.  Check out this earlier thread regarding the saddlebag keys.  http://suraklyn.com/yabb/YaBB.pl?num=1165368421  There is a link at the bottom of the thread to Snowbum's site with loads of information.

-----edit---------------------------------------------------
OK, I just went out to verify the location and I was wrong.  Here is a picture of the keycode on Graham's bag (at the latch that attaches the bag to the bike)

Here is another picture that gives a better idea of the location on the latch where the code is.

Once you have the code, go to the link in the above thread to get the BMW part # for your particular key.

Hope this helps.

Sorry Justin, I was at work (as I am now), and by the time I get home I have forgotten all about this stuff.

I am glad Aïda was able to help out, though!

I tried to fix his picture, but my imaging software here (at work) is not up to par, either...

edit: there, how is that?

ok, fortunately the right latch that locks the bag to the frame is unlattched and i se a number. i'll have to determine what the number actually is in daylight tho.

unfortunately, the rivets on the hinges hav e been drilled or popped, and looks like some were replaced with nuts and bolts. minor problem all things considered. new rivets or some stainless hardware should fix it right up.

Fixer, you should probably forget about the bags & focus on getting the bike running for now.

Tell you what, I'll Paypal you 50 bucks, you stuff 'em in a big box and send 'em to me, with all the racks & hardware, and then that'll be one less thing for you to worry about, ok?
Just trying to help... ;)

*ahem* yeah.... 'cept they need to come OFF the bike to get to the shocks, etc. also need to remove the goofy aftermarket sissybar/package platform on the back. while the platform looks practical, i've seen othere versions that looked better on the bike.

FIRST thing is to try and get the title squared away.

then clean out the tank, replace the missing petcock, clean out the carbs

thanks for the offer, but i think i'll be keeping the bags.  ;)

I hear ya, but don't throw that goofy sissybar/rack away before you look it over closely.
From the one picture we've got here, it looks like an original Reynolds rack, and ought to be worth either a few bucks or a decent trade for some other needed parts.
Good luck, man. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

no worries, not throwing nothing away yet.

i still have a lot to learn about the old boxers, and while i know a lot of people with from ADVrider.com they're mostly into the newer GS bikes, KL\TMs and stuff like that... so i've got a lot to learn, but i'm a quick study, and in a year or so, i'll be well equipped to answer these types of questions like i do for the KLRs at KLR650.net. i can't tell you how often we answer questions about the brakes, suspension, the carb, subframe bolts and the infamous "doohickey".

i haven't seen any markings on the rack yet, but how would i tell if its a Renyolds or not?

Does it look like this?  If it does, it is a Reynolds.  VERY well made.  (A bit on the heavy side...)
