That "Sinking" Feeling..
« on: September 09, 2016, 01:01:30 PM »
Been making the most of the good weather with a few ride outs but N/S  carb has started to flood when the bike is not moving or when engine is not running.
I have just checked my records and its almost 8 years since I last rebuilt the carbs... not too bad I suppose but a job for the winter "To Do" list, no doubt the Texas Carb balancer (its bigger than the rest) will come in useful in the spring.
Just wondered how long you guys have gone between rebuilds.

I was disappointed that one of my floats was a sinker after only 7 years. You hear many cases where they last a lot longer than that so it's probably not the norm.

As a short term measure you could try compensating by setting that float below parallel so that the outer end of the float is 3- 5mm below the hinge end.  One thing for sure, it's no use trying to set the floats by the depth in the bowl method as it won't give an accurate result on a heavy float. If you do get the chance to weigh them them then I found that 16 grams was a sinker.

I confess that I do not drain the fluids/fuel in winter as I am impulsive and like to have a blast whenever I feel the need for speed... well relatively speaking so I am not overly surprised, I will be doing the splines and crown wheel this time as well 3 years since last pull down other than the preventative maintenance every thing else seems hunky dory.
I will weigh them out of interest when I eventually do swap them

Hello !
I've found that 12.5~12.7  gr is "the norm" for a sound float.
As it is quite easy to remove them with the carb on the bike, I would weight them just to know..

You may dislodge the chip of paint or dirt that cause the overflow... (i had a carb doing so and after a check, problem solved... so you may be lucky)

Turns out the floats are ok, the problem is a pin hole in the fuel line behind the carb.

After causing all this worry, concern and loss of sleep for all of us as we hoped and prayed you would find a cure, I think you ought to go ahead and replace the floats. What the heck... Do a full carb overhaul. I know I'll feel better for it.

Great news .... emergency supplies of shiner are on their way from Cowtown as we speak with a little help from you know who [smiley=thumbsup.gif].
I will test the "Bluebell" on my next visit, can you still get "Little Kings"?

Little Kings is beer - what they used to call Cream Ale.  Seems like it was more popular up than around these parts although it might have been available here at one time?   Green bottles and did they come in a small version?  Like an 8 pack of smaller ones instead of a six pack of the usual size?

Yep, just checked, still exists.  And comes out of Cincinnati which is why I associated it with up north (my mother is from there).  Not sure if it shows up around these parts.

I was a favourite tipple of my buddy in Austin (now living in Beaumont) when I first visited 25 years ago and became a Texican missionary spreading the good word to all who would listen.
