Oil leak

So I changed the oil a couple weekends ago.  Didn't end up going with synthetic as I had half a 5 quart jug of conventional valvoline 20w50 on the shelf.  Go for a couple commutes, and I notice I'm leaving a bigger puddle than most hardleys. Get home to the garage and have a peek.  Drain bolts are tight, and anyways most of the oil is collecting on the bottom of the drain pan.  I figure.. better check the drain pan bolts.  I snugged them up, since I had done that gasket about 5k miles ago.  Still leaking.  I think the culprit is the push rod tubes grommets.  I'd done the left side when I had the head off for the broken exhaust valve spring, and I guess now it's time to do the right side.  Good thing I don't have plans for this weekend...  If I can get parts in time.  Anybody happen to know the parts list required, or a quick supplier?

Besides the pair of grommets, you'll need the large O-ring for the cylinder base, two of the smaller O-rings for the upper cylinder studs and a head gasket. Rocker box cover gasket if you think you might want it. Spares are always good to have on hand.

Dudester, it's already Tuesday afternoon here in Tejas. Max or Bob's BMW has the goods but getting them by the weekend? Next or 2-Day Air will cost more than the parts!

Clean it off really, really good and put a smear of silicone gasket goop on it. Ride the beautiful WX forecast weekend in Austin -where I will also be this weekend- and fix it when the parts arrive via USPS.

Family stuff but I do want to hit Revival Cycles on SoCo before I leave Travis County.

You may want to look at the oil gallery plugs on the left side of the motor.
 Mine leak but I really don't care about that much.
beside I think one of then is behind the frame.

I'm trying to find out if the local guy has any in stock, but ordering online seems like the ticket.  The surprising part to me was it went from no leak to lotta leak in a few days.  I suspect the cold weather had an effect, my R65 has been living outside and I saw frost on my seat last week, one lovely early morning.

If he was quick he could leave the head attached to the cylinder which would reduce the parts count to the grommets and "O" rings. The "O" rings could be got at any bearing shop, sadly the grommets will still have to come from a BMW parts supplier.

Not in this ******* traffic!  Although I did work down the street from there until last September.

Last time I had the cylinder off I don't think I was very fast at getting it replaced.  I don't mind getting a new o-ring and gasket involved, for a few shekels extra.  Luckily the local guy has everything in stock, now I just have to fight traffic to get to his end of town.

He had everything in stock, and it only took an hour (!) to drive from my office to his place in South Austin.  He's tough to schedule around, but he's done all of the major repairs on my R65... a sampling:

engine swap
transmission R&R (twice)
fork rebuild
new rear shock (ordered through him)

He also works on other Euro marques, and does track day setup and support.  Cool guy, really knows his stuff.

I met Roger couple years ago at an AHMRA road race at Texas Motorsports Ranch. He was busier than a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs helping racers set up their suspensions for race day. He was running out of pockets... stuffed full of cash from happy racers.

Thanks for the heads up, Matt. I just got back from three days in South Austin. The "Keep It Weird" Austin city motto hits it square on the head... and my credit card.

I managed to do the job in 3.5 hours this past weekend.  Then had to go back last night and readjust the valves; a little bit too clackity.

Leak solved, although interestingly I think he gave me a different grommet type.  It fits and works, if it's upside down.
