Snowbum Revised Carb Synch Article
« on: November 16, 2015, 10:17:46 AM »
Bob the Snowbum has his 14 SEP 2015 revised carb synching article posted on the ABC website. http://www.airheads.org At this time, the site is open for non-ABC members

Yes, it's his typical lengthy writing style complete with many CAPITALIZED SENTENCES IN RED with double and triple exclamation and question marks in !!!??? The nuggets are there. You'll just have to sift through the chaff the find them.
Well worth reading and saving as Bob does delve into AvGas questions, valve seat issues and multiple ways to balance the CV Bings.

http://www.airheads.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=205:including-a-low-carb-synchronizer-and-information-on-unleaded-gasoline&catid=12:technical-tips&Itemid=140

I'm hopeful that the ABC is back on track after the internal management and operational wars have been resolved. I may renew my old membership but will reserve that decision for another day. "Simple By Choice" became very complicated.

I let my ABC membership expire in early 2008, I didn't like what I saw, an  ego maniac in charge of the organization, B Jan Hoffman .

Also let my membership expire shortly afterward with BMWMOA as well .

No club, ' Lone Wolf !! ' . ;D ;D ;) ;) ;)

Is that article any different than what he has on his own web site?  I never use the Airheads.org site for tech articles.  I am still a member, but don't get out much, even for tech days.

Pretty sure Bob replaced his site's "carb synch" article with his revised version. Have not looked it up but just an edumacated guess.

Then you missed out on the total control freak disaster when Joe Cuda became "Chairman of the Entire F-ing World of the ABC". Membership went down the toilet and will take a genuine effort to restore it to prior levels, if ever. Lots of concern about the amount of cash that B. Jan was drawing for his fairly weak content ABC AirMail magazine. I'll wait and see how it goes.

I recently tried the free three-month subscription to the BMWMOA magazine. Can't say I was impressed. I get the feeling that Airhead guru Matt Parkhouse may be close to retiring from his long-time contributions to the MOA magazine. They have a new guy doing an Airhead tech column but he is a condescending piece of work that is already generating negative feedback in the 'letters' section. If you enjoy reviews of $1000.00 riding suits or pricey GS farkles, you'll be in hog heaven. Me? I'll pass on the pricey membership.

My sentiments exactly Monte.

Sadly the Airhead is a dying breed and the various clubs and forums that support them (including this one I am sorry to say) have see their peak and are now in the (hopefully) long process of tapering off.

Increasingly Airhead ownership is a "badge" pointing to a certain quaint eccentricity (and long may that be the case in the face of a uniform field of grey conformity that besets modern motorcycles).

I lapsed most of my forum memberships some years ago and allowed my State based club membership to lapse decades ago (the only things I got for the membership were a badge to put on the bike and the opportunity to wait endlessly in the queue for access to the small cache of special tools owned by the club.

Once I had sufficient special tools to see me through anything I wanted to tackle there simply wasn't a reason to belong anymore.

May I relate a recent story from my time in the Airheads Facebook list (my last attempt to sign up for anything new in relation to online airhead forums).

I related my fumbling attempts to diagnose a noise I could not "pick" and the resultant detaching of the ring gear from my clutch carrier.

Pompous asshat No.1 proceeded to tell me that R65s are well known for shedding ring gears. I led him on gently for a while and then pointed out that since 1981 all airheads have an identical clutch carrier. He disappeared.

Pompous asshat No.2 proceeded to tell me I was a fool to continue riding the machine, but could tell me how he would have ultimately diagnosed the fault without doing a bulk engine strip and eyeballing every potential noise maker. This one was particularly affronted by my assertion that the absence of oil on my boots, the maintaining of full oil pressure and no ALT light was grounds to keep goign and "see what happens".

Finally someone with knowledge actually answered my question about gearbox input shaft length changes in 1981 which meant that I needed to buy a new clutch carrier and could not use the old 1979/80 R65 flywheel I have in stock.

Mercifully this group is 100% free of that kind of nonsense.

On a related topic - I removed the rear subframe, battery box and swing arm last night, in the process being very glad of the uber-expensive Stahlwillie 10mm ring spanner I bought more than 30 years ago for the express purpose of removing drive shaft flange bolts. I even have an adaptor that fits in the 12mm opposite end so I can use a torque wrench to do them up (but I've never bothered - 1/8th of a turn after the bolt seats is more than sufficient torque in my opinion - based on never having broken one, or had one back out on me........

I wonder if Mike V in Sandy Eggo has any comments on this, seeing as it's in his backyard .
He's been in contact over the years with the local members of the ABC club .

I've never actually heard of any airhead shredding ring gears in the 32 years that I've been a fan of boxers.

By a bizarre and unhappy consequence, there are two in this group ATM that have shed the ring gear from a clutch carrier.

Bob,

I've fallen away a bit myself. The power struggle soured me and I've neglected to read all the debris that showered my inbox. Instead I just leaned on the delete button.  I do stay in touch with a few members who are close friends but my domestic and job responsibilities (and some health issues) have taken me away from riding and wrenching as it once was in the past. I still hold a membership in the Airheads and MOA, amongst a few others.  The ON magazine I receive has seemed to bow to a different rider and interest than my own. This website is one I visit daily with my morning coffee.  Even though I have limited posts, I enjoy visiting this forum regularly. It's always been very friendly and constructive. I try to post only when I have something constructive to interject, which isn't often. This forum is very unique in my opinion, and one of the best.

As for clubs, I can take them or leave them.  I have a lot of respect for all of you here.

I ride and wrench for the personal joy and satisfaction to share with others with like enjoyment.

This thread has taken a turn so I feel free to add my $.02 worth. I have never been a "member" type of personality. I joined MOA and let my membership lapse. I tries the Airheads but let it lapse also. I don't need the aggrevation of either  one.

I like BMWR65.org because of what it is,  a free exchange of ideas. And I will support it for just that reason.

I still get the Airlist, but I pretty much just skimmed the whole Chairman thing.  Now my own airmarshal is the director/chairman.  He's a decent guy.  I don't know what made him want the job.
