me again - another carb question
« on: March 12, 2013, 07:13:22 AM »
Well I went to get the carb numbers so that I could order a rebuild kit for them, but when I checked them against my shiny new Bing manual, they're not R65LS carbs at all - they're apparently R65 ones. The numbers are 64/32/307 & 308 as opposed to the /335 & 336 of the LS variant  :-?

I'm assuming that the bodies etc will be identical, just the jetting will differ, so would you recommend that I stick with whatever is in them, or go with the R65LS jetting, which is marginally different? My initial thought is to stick with what I've got and order a couple of R65 kits  :-/

Thanks as always

Th only difference in the Re-build kits would be if they include jets otherwise the carbs bodies are identical. The different numbers just denote the changes in jetting.

Only the needle jet needs any routine replacement as it together with the needle can wear. None of the other jets wear so Unless they are damaged I wouldn't replace them.

What's the difference in the jetting ?

The later carbs are I think  45 pilot  138 mains and 2.64 needle jet with needle in position 3

Hello !
If your R65LS was made before 83, the carbs are the same as the R65.
The differences where purely aesthetics. In 83, the whole lot (R65 "plain" and LS) got new carbs and a new filter cover.
If you need it I can give you the jetting for the 307/308 carbs.
P.S. Actually, the whole engine is the same between R65 and LS. The fittings are different. You can check this at the BMW classic shop or Realoem a part number cover the whole R65 range.

According to the Bing manual...

R65 64/32/307-308
main jet 145
needle jet 2.64
jet needle 241
throttle valve 850
float bowl 60
clip position 4

R65LS 64/32/335-336
main jet 138
needle jet 2.64
jet needle 251
throttle valve 851
float bowl 66
clip position 3

I think I'll just stick with whats on the bike lol. Not sure of the manufacture date, but it was registered in June 1983.

What are the last 7 characters of the bikes VIN, that will tell you for sure the date of manufacture .
'81 R65
'82 R65 LS
'84 R65 LS
'87 Moto Guzzi V65 Lario
'02 R1150R
Riding all year long since 1993 .
I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

The RealOem web site gives for your VIN a manufacture date of April 1982.  So you should have the same carbs as my bike which is VIN 63188751 and was made, too, in April 82. (put on road on April 84, though...).
So the 64/32/307 and 64/32/308 are the right carbs for your bike.

Thanks George!

I was just doing another few searches trying to find out how to identify the year of manufacture. Thanks for the pointer - I'll bookmark it now  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
