What is a good place to buy ignition points and condenser for a '79 R65.  I've bought them before but can't remember my source.

Probably not going to be your first choice but if you can't find good ones locally Motobins have them at £6.65. They say 100% German made.

Beware made in china genuine BMW supplied points that had an over sized rubbing block. This was a recent problem reported for 70 - 78 points.  It's not clear if it also affected BMW supplied canister points.

You still have to occasionally adjust the gap to compensate for rubbing block wear but the contacts will never wear out!

I get mine from NAPA they are ECHLIN part no. CS313. I use them on my 1980 and they work good. I think that the parts guy once told me they are the same points that are used in VW engines.

I've already done some research on this.

I have a spare set of genuine BMW points part no 12 11 1 243 969 for my 79.

According to my MITECH auto electrical catalogue there are a  whole range of alternative sources for these points equivalent to MITECH type CP-701.  Note they quote the correct BMW part no and the the photo is also identical to my spare set.

To confirm that Volkswagen air cooled 1964 - 1968 points can be used take a look at this article and you'll see something that looks similar to a bean can. Again lower down the page there is  photo of the points that look identical to my spare set.  Note the condenser looks the same as ours too.

Hello !
Although I didn't have points in my R65, I've checked this.
The BMW part is, according to a big auto parts stockist in France (oscaro.com), the BOSCH part 1 237 013 141 which is fitted to a, whaouh, Porsche 911 2.0 Targa with 160 CV under the hood and a monkey behind the wheel as said my Granny....
There is no doubt other points will fit with a little different length or connecting wire.
Hope this helps.
P.S. the price quoted by Oscaro is 4.78 € tax included each. If you plan to order you can add OX35 or OX37D oil filters or LX56 air filter for post 81 models...

Norris points are a good recommendation as they are highly thought of in Airhead circles but unfortunately they are not correct for a 79 - 80 as the part No changed when they were mounted in the Bean can after 78. Couldn't see a set suitable for the Bean can bikes at Ted's Beemershop. Someone else might have them though.

I've used the VW points. You have a choice with them, though. Normal and high performance - which has a stiffer spring. You'll want the high performance set since they'll handle the higher RPMs than a standard VW.
