RMS leak...

I've known it was leaking for a while.  What a mess.... This project is a full down strip, clean and paint, so now is the time to do it.  

Also have a nifty leak on the pushrod seal.    The leaks aren't so bad, but all the crap that sticks in the oil makes it all the worse.

Well - maybe a little!

Don't forget the large o-ring on the inside of the flywheel/starter ring-holder.

And I read of one fellow replacing his RMS twice before discovering his oil pump cover was cracked!  So give that a good look-over.  And I have a spare if you happen to need one.

I really like your idea of unplugging the wiring harness before removing the transmission!  Then you can wrestle with the neutral switch contacts on YOUR terms! :)

It just turned out that way....I couldn't tell the difference between the wires, they were so dirty.   :)

Rob, I'm confused....I haven't taken the flyhweel off yet since I didn't have the right bolts to put it back on.   I also (apparently) don't have the right RMS either.  (Shop sent me the driveshaft seal).

The red ring you show in the photo looks like the O-ring for the oil pump cover in this photo http://www.northwoodsairheads.com/maintenance-parts.html  (half way down).

What does the R65 look like with the flywheel removed?  What number is the RMS in the realoem link?  I couldn't figure it out.

Steve, the o-ring for the oil pump cover is thinner in diameter than the one for the flywheel.



I found out the hard way when I tried fitting the larger one in the oil pump cover.  I was confused, to say the least.

Wow Mike,  that's seriously clean in there!  Mine's an '80, so the clutch photos aren't the same.  No worries though.  What did you use for all the cleaning?  


My whole bike is *completely* apart.   I'm sort of restoring it as well, paint, etc.   I was trying to get the driveshaft out of the swing arm.   Clymer's shows a nut to take of the collar that meets the final drive, but that's clearly a different bike.  How's that done on an R65.

It's amazing how much you learn about something when you take it apart.  I'm having a ball!

To get the drive shaft out of the housing, you need a tool that looks like a McPherson strut compressor tool .

The final drive end of the drive shaft is where it comes apart , you need to compress the drive shaft, then you can see the wire circlip on a groove on the shaft itself, it keeps the bell/gear part of drive shaft from coming off .

You need to compress item #7 the spring, to get access to the clip .

Lots of Brake Cleaner, Simple Green (50-50 mix), grout brushes, scotch brite pads and more labor than I want to admit.  I agree - it's a kick to get inside these bikes while the tricks, lessons and education never stop. Yes it's for crankcase ventilation as msbuck says and it is or should be a reed valve. The strip of metal secured by the screw is just a stop to limit the travel of the thin reed underneath.
