She died yesterday on the German Highway, where one is allowed to go 130 MPH.
But my R 65 could not stand 6.000 RPM over 10 minutes; the left bigend went out.

And she behaved so well lately...gradually used more of the power....

It took me 2.5 hours to crawl back to home, at a pace of 20 miles.

I still have a bare engine in the basement though.
And I have the " opportunity" to open the gearbox as well, because it makes too much dust of iron in the oil.

Or I drop this one in the basement too, and buy another one.
This asks for a nice spreadsheet calculation.

Before summer holidays no more BMW with nice RS fairing.
Also because my wife wants to redo the wooden floor, and paint the interior.
Then she doesnt like it when I am tinkering in the shed....

So a spanner in one hand, and a paint brush in the other.

Well the calculation is simple.
If I sell the dead R 65, I have lost some 1.000 E.
Yes yes, sunk costs.....
And, if I can fit the 1979 stuff on the 1986 bare engine only with crank+camshaft, it is only time I need, no money involved.


...what am I waiting for?
so..lets say..Thursday (holiday) the old engine + trans out, etc.

It is all supposed to be fun, so I will have fun!

Hi Trolle,

About your bike:
How are the heads now? The last thing I know is that the new exhaust valves
were digging themselves in the heads. Okay now?

They were redone last year with new exhaust seats and valves and after securing the butterfly of the right carb the engine is running better than ever - steady idling at 750 rpm and running up to 7500 rpm with no trouble at all. It is really a joy to ride her now.

Hope you will manage to assemble a working engine from the two you have.

Are you aware that the clutch from the '79 may not go on the crankshaft of the '86.

And if you have a clutch for the '86, I am real sure that it will not hook up to the '79 transmission without some trouble.

Those are pretty different animals.
Just now "stripped" is the '86 engine?

No ignition/charging system, no starter - when did it last run?

 I think if you keep the 79 clutch and the 79 flywheel together and 79 gearbox  or 86 clutch components and 86 flywheel and 86 gearbox, you should be OK

The short blocks should be swappable, no?

hi,

(ight arm in mitella because of a dull but severe pain) the bare engine is crank (obvious) cam, distr. full stop.
i bougt it for cyls ans heads,
which i used on the 1979. with a mod of the engine case.
the ign start+dyn seems ready to b swapped, the flywheel i havw to try but i am confident. the tranny seems to fit.
so clutch+wheel+rtans will be 79.

i opened also the tranny because it howled and made too much metallic powder.
and because it was out for engine removal.
 i needed 140 deg celsius to get the axles out.
further is simple.
replace bearings.
if my arm is going allright or not do it anyhow.

Have you determined the cause of the howling?  Just worn bearings?

I guess worn bearings; they had pretty much (axial) play, and one could tilt the axles much also.
the cogs look like new to me.

a strange pattern on the teeth though: oblique striping on some cogs! a line pattern some 30 degrees out of axle direction. :-? :-?
I am in the ordering phase now, also for the engine. (not muchneeded)
