Question about Rubbers
« on: June 30, 2010, 06:05:41 PM »
Rubber gaskets near the turn signals and headlight ears that is.  Here's the problem:

On my '79 the headlights are attached to headlight ears which are mounted around the front forks.  The turn signals are also mounted on the front forks just below headlight ears and above the lower triple tree.  I only have two rubbers per fork for the turn signal/headlight ear setup and I think maybe there  should be three.  One fits under the turn signal bracket which is on the fork just above the lower triple tree.  The other appears to fit on the top of the headlight ear just below the upper triple tree.  It looks to me like there should be a third rubber between the bottom of the headlight ear and the top of the turn signal bracket.
Anyone know about this?

I  have searched my Clymer manual and the Real OEM web site and can't find any of the rubbers.

No, that's a different setup than mine Bob.  Mine has a conical wraparound on each fork and the ears are attached to this cone. The cone fits between the upper and lower triple tree and the headlight attaches to the ears.

Well, that's not a stock R65 set up, sounds like someone installed an earlier BMW turn directional system on the front of the bike .

You may want to try looking in RealOEM for '70's bikes, like the R75, R90, R60, to see if anything there matches what you have .

Sounds like you have a set up for the /5 or /6 models.  Is it similar to item 2 on this diagram?

Bengt I looked at your link but it took me to the engine section.  So I checked the frame etc for the same bike and the R60/5 and 6, R75/5 and 6 and R90/6.  Each one of them has basically the same set-up but not the same as mine.  I know I have seen these headlight ears on other BMW's but I've looked through the parts fiche at other models and can't find it.

Bengt I found it.  It's in the R90s diagrams of the front suspension.  I think Bob is right that parts in the front suspension on mine has been changed.  The headlight brackets have been changed.  But the  lower part of the triple tree looks original and does not fit these brackets properly.  I'll be looking for a used headlight bracket now.

Looking at the parts diagram it's the item called the front panel that the headlight attaches to that I am missing.  Can anyone describe how this panel attaches to the front suspension?  I'm wondering if there are other parts that have been changed out.

The R65 front headlight panel bolts via rubber mounts to the upper and lower triple clamps. You should see threaded holes in the front face of the top yoke and bottom face of the lower yoke.

Yes I see those threaded holes Barry.  Thanks for the info.

Barry, I see you are from Cheshire (like the cat) :).  Which part of Cheshire are you from?  I was born in Huyton, nr Liverpool.  I had an aunt and cousins that owned a boarding house on the Mersey in Wallasey.  I have many fond memories of visiting there and New Brighton when I was a kid.

Hi Mike

I just looked up Huyton on the map and its ony 35 miles away from where I live. I'm on the East side of Cheshire a few miles outside the Town of Macclesfield.

Now I really did have to look up Nanaimo, BC. I should have got the short hand for British Columbia. I have several cousins in Canada way over on the East side in Ontario. I've visited them twice now and admire your country. Sure is big though from one side to the other.
