At last, my love has come along :)

Ladies and gents,
It is with deep sorrow that i must come forth and tell all of you...i don't belong here anymore as i no longer own an R65....well...not REALLY. I just finished putting a '74 R90/6 engine and transmission into my '65 frame  ;D it's not running yet but i'm working on it haha.

SO my problem is takin all the parts i want from my old engine and putting onto the 900. first issue is the alternator and since the 650 is already out of the frame, theres no way i can stop the motor from turning when i try to remove that center bolt. removing the alternator from the 900 way easy cuz it i had already put it in the bike and i'm not swapping them again, any suggestions?

second problem is taking off the starter but once i get the alt and front cover off, that wont be hard.

then there's the points. from what I hear over on boxerworks, i can wire it up to my current coil, just wondering if there's anymore knowledge or experience on that here.

and that's about it. a little info on how i came to own this gem, from what i heard it was in a bike that got pinned inbetween 2 trucks so everything was ruined except the engine and tranny. the headers were bent at the crossover so i had it cut out and welded back up so i have 2 separate pipes but the left side got creased into the port so it fits but it sits a bit higher than the other side and i may have issues with it hitting the shifter which is a BMW heel-toe :) never used one of those before muahahaha. so when its all said and done, hopefully i'll be running a '74 900cc engine in my short R65 frame with '83 electrics. and i'll still be using those foot long emgo pipes too :)

awaffa-

If your clutch assembly is still in place on the R65 engine, I would take a scrap piece of flat metal and drill some holes in it such that you could put (2) of the bolts that hold the clutch pressure plate through it, and then one of allen bolts that hold the transmission to the engine block through a hold in the outer end of the flat metal piece- this will prevent the engine from turning. [Edit - you're not planning to use the rotor from your R65 in the R90 are you?  I *think* that the rotors are slightly different diameter - or at least the /5 rotors are different diameter and aren't interchangeable, I can't recall if the /6 rotors are the same as the later bikes or the /5 bikes?)

If your R65 is a 79-80 model with points ignition, then you can just simply hook up the coil(s) to your R90's points system... BUT, if your R65 is a 1981 or later model that uses the electronic ignition with the hall effect (bean can) sensor, then the coils used with that system is a bit too low in resistance to be used with the points system.   The lower resistance of the coil will cause excessive current draw with the points and lead to premature wear/pitting of the points, etc.   If you want to use one of the compact, dual output "Dyna" coils, you'd want to use the "Green" coil (or a variety of other coils that have approx 3 Ohms primary resistance).  The Bosch Blue coils of course will work, and others.  I'm not sure what is involved if you try to convert the R90 engine to use the standard post 1981 hall effect bean can  & ICU as far as mounting the newer bean can up to the crankshaft nose.  There are other solid state ignition options to pursue, too.

nope the transmission is still on the motor but you gave me an idea. i could go buy 2 long bolts from a hardware store to fit the input flange on the tranny then just use a long bar inbetween them to stop it from turning :)

as for the rotors, im still using everything on my R65, i just put the 900 engine and tranny into it.

and the coils...getting my hands on the dynas will be a bit problematic as im still the same broke teenager i was when i joined lol. with that said, anyone want to buy my ICU and coil?

Good luck on your project, sounds interesting. Pics next time, ok?

Check out this cool /2 conversion with an R90 drivetrain and R65 front end, with snowflake mags too.
Maybe not a "true" conversion, but I think it's slicker'n hell.

Truly a Frankenbeemer, but beautiful nevertheless.  R65 front, R90 train, and is that a \2 hind quarter?  Looks like the shocks, seat, and tail light are \2.

Yep, you nailed it, and it's got a /5 headlight bucket to boot.
Again, it's not a super clean "authentic" /2 conversion, but instead a classy, solid, reliable bike you could actually ride on a daily basis.
And for a much smaller investment than your usual total conversion, which means a lot to all of us, right Awaffa?

Heck, it's even got a disc up front, so it'll stop too!  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

I wish now I'd made a winning bid on an e-bay /2 rolling chassis last fall, that still looks like a very nice daily rider....I'm looking at a sidecar so this could work
