New rider from down south!! Need help!
« on: May 26, 2009, 06:08:32 PM »
Hello Gentlemen,

I have just erase by mistake a long message that I had just written, so I will cut the long story short!

I am Spanish, from Malaga and have an r65 that belonged to my dad. It has a problem that maybe you can help me with!

The engine doesnt seem to be running round, I belive that one cylinder doesnt work properly or at all. One cylinder gets hotter than the other really quick after start. I have opened them both and seem to be in a perfect shape (only 9000 miles on them). So I suspect an electical problem.

Also I would appreciate any tips on things to check/lubricate/replace after such a long time parked.

Many thanks in advacne!!

[movedhere] General Announcements [move by] Rob Valdez 79 R65.

Welcome Remolon,

I hope you don't mind, but I moved your thread to the technical section.

Please provide the year the bike was made.  You might want to just add this information to your signature line if you plan to be around for a while.

Your English is very good!   [smiley=thumbup.gif]

Welcome Remolon,

First off how long has it been since  the bike was ridden, or started.

You need to remove the spark plug after running it, and see what condition the spark plug is in, on the 'cold' cylinder, does it have fuel on it, do you get a 'healthy' bluish spark, when you do a check of the spark plug sitting on the cylinder, and operate the starter ?

You've come to the right place for R65's. Bienvenidos!

Suggest you purchase a manual for your classic R65. Both the Clymer and Haynes shop manuals will provide you with plenty of service information.

The R65s are notorious for failures of the stock ignition coil. If you're not getting fire to one cylinder, this could be a concern. Pull the spark plug/s and hold them securely to the cylinder head. A plastic clamp will keep you from a shocking experience. Watch for a spark as you hit the starter button.

Post back with more info as to the year of your R65.

You can also switch the plug leads and see if the previously dead cylinder comes alive and the previously good cylinder dies.  The coil my only be getting spark to one side.

Welcome aboard & let us know which year your bike is.  It's important as they were changed from year to year.

Hi Romolon

welcome to the group, you are the first member from Spain we've had, and as Justin points out, we are from "all over the map".

For those of you who do not know Malaga, I can inform you that Malaga is a beatiful town in the south of Spain. It has got a lot of good restaurants and a very nice Rambla.

I did some work with a couple of blokes in Malaga last year so I have been there.

greetings from a very windy and sunny north

Hey, I've been to Malaga!  Loved the short vacation I had in Spain and would love to go back.  The countryside is lovely and very warm and friendly folks.  Also very motorcycle friendly.  Hmmm, possibly a European tour one of these days if I can ever talk Feyonce' into getting herself a passport.

Welcome to the forum Romolon and join in the fun.

I thought we had somebody else from Spain, but maybe that was a different forum.  I remember Google-Earthing his local to admire the terrain, very mountainous.

Welcome Romolon!  You'll get plenty of good advice from the folks on this forum.  All you have to do is speak up and you'll hear plenty!

Hello Everybody again!!

I Joined in last may and havent logged sinced then!!. I am rider from south spain that came up with a technical question.

Well I one cylinder is not burning properly. I can tell by the the engine not running round and the huge temperature spread between cylinders.

I tryed your suggestion on my 1979 R65 (checking the sparks with the starter) and the result is that I get good healthy blu sparks on both sides.

So what do you guys think that I should check next??,

Also I need to change the tires, can you give me what tires you recommend for a dry weather city...

About the only place to go from here, is the carburetor .

Don't know anything about your bike, but it may be time to go through the carburetors, and do a rebuild of all the rubber parts, seals gaskets, floats, float needles and a thorough cleaning, then do a carburetor synchronization .

remolon,
My suggestion would be; now that you know you're getting spark is to do a compression check and a valve adjustment (or check), then a fuel flow check. Don't recall seeing in your threads that this has been done.  If so, follow Bob's instructions to the carbs.
Keep us informed - good luck.

Thank you guys!!, I need to buy the spare parts and renew the carburators. Now that you mention it, we drained fuel from both carburators and one was pooring a lot of dirt!!...

Will have a look and comeback asap!!

cheers!!
