Motobins Alternative Oil Filter

I'm getting an order assembled for parts from Motobins .

I was browsing through their online catalog, and saw non-OEM oil filters, that were quite 'cost effective', anyone have any experience with these filters ?

I guess the 10  'cost effective' filters I ordered from Euromoto Electrics will not help to save money (in my case) at all.

Since I realised that these filters are non- OEM, I decided still to use them, but rather to change oil more often........so I will be facing a higher oil bill.

               When I purchased the my R65. I found a after market oil filter in the bike. IT WAS FLAT! It had collapsed. Be careful! OLDPAUL.

I'm hesitant about non-OEM filters, due to some horror stories that I've heard over the years .

Hate to destroy an engine, for just being cheap .

Last time I purchased an oil filter for the R65 locally, cost was around $20 .

The spin on oil filter that the oilhead has, is $25, and looks just like the $8 OEM filter that goes on my Honda Civic .

Thanks for the advice Oldpaul. The bike has done about 1200 km since installation of the non-OEM filter. I will drain oil during next weekend, to have a proper look at the filter.

Just another thought Bob - before you place the order, it might be worthwhile asking Motobins about the country of origin, regarding their 'cost effective" filters........the country of origin has clearly been stamped on the filters I bought from Euromoto Electrics........

Here's a USA/Colorado vendor that I use. Great pricing and pronto delivery. I use 'em and like 'em.

Wix filters, made in Poland; it's the new global business economics model. Filters are complete with O-rings, gaskets and metal shim. Bendy-style for easy installation.

Euro MotoElectrics I am pretty sure is the same fellow/company who supplied the EnduraLast 400 watt alternator kit upgrade for our bikes and that I bought and installed. The upgrade has behaved perfectly and the instructions that came with it were so well written and illustrated that a neophyte like me did the installation. That is saying a lot!!!
EnduraLast kit...no brushes, no diode board...air cooled rectifier voltage regulator combination...eliminates burnt-out warning light no-charge condition of Bosch systems.

I would counter the worrying with the fact that Motobins are a worldwide firm with a great deal to lose if they supplied products that were suspect quality.  

I have always used the 'cheaper option' but from a decent supplier like Motobins and Motorworks and they have never been let down.

OldPaul - It would be nice to know what make the collapsed Oil filter was,  who put it in, and how long had it been in there.

My concern would be, that in my case, you're dealing with a business, a quarter of a world away, and no real recourse, if it were to cause  an engine failure .

I placed my order with Motobins at 07:00 this morning local (15:00 in Lincolnshire), see how long it takes to get to me, about 5,300 miles  (8500km) away .

                       I brought this bike hone in a pickup truck. As I found it on a local used car lot with a dead battery, I had two options. Bring it home in the truck, or borrow a battery from a buddies R80 and ride it home. Glad I used the truck. When I removed the old filter, it came out in two, or three pieces. I just remember it was a mess. I should have tried to I.D. it.  I have always ordered replacements filters from  BMW dealers here in Calif. I have excellant luck with Irv Seavers in Orange both for my R100 GS/PD and R65. They have never sent the wrong part. After reading Oaks "$2000.00 O ring" article many times, I can't use anything but the OEM filter. I was never able to talk to the
previous owner, she mover to Indonesia. OLDPAUL.

The filters (bendy style) I bought from Euro Motoelectrics have been made in Korea - the country of origin has been printed on the metal end flanges.

I must say, the service by Euro Motoelectrics seem to be excellent - they have posted the filters on the same day, when ordered.

I will remove the installed filter for inspection during this next weekend - and if I do not find any distortion, I will put it back for inspection at 3 000 km.

If I do find any distortion, I will try to send some quality pics of the filter.

I have ordered a number of things from Motobins and have been very satisfied with everything with the exception of the last couple of valve cover gaskets I received.  I noticed when I opened the pcckege thast they were just not as thick as the ones I got from Capital Cycle.  I'm not sure of the brand of either gasket, but I remember the ones from Motobins were brown and the others I'd used were white.  They worked fine when I put them on, but the left side started to leak  after removing and replacing the covers a couple of times to tinker with the valves.  My old ones never leaked after over a year of use and numerous removals.  

A little Permatex seems to have stopped the leak.  I love Motobin's site and I am going to continue to order stuff from them, but not valve cover gaskets.

They have a loyal following, across the globe, must be nice to have a parts supplier like this, 'in your backyard', I'm envious of you members in the UK .

2 weeks back I drove through Linconshire on the way to a holiday in Norfolk and when I realised I had been only a few miles from Motobins and didn't think to call in I could have kicked  myself.

I have enough parts in stock for the next service but there must have been something I wanted. In the 70's we'd ride down to the local British bike spares place just to look at stuff and pass the time of day.
