instrument housing repair
« on: September 17, 2009, 10:29:30 PM »
Quite awhile back someone posted a repair made on a broken  rubber instrument housing that looked good.. it was broken right at the narrow spot on the side - same as mine - any idea where that post is, I can't find it.. or does anyone have an idea on this? What glue would work? Thanks, Bill Conquest

I can't link to the page, but if you go back 9 pages in this section, it's under the heading dash panel, started by Dav, 07/11/09 .

Yeah, that's the one, thanks !!!

Has anyone found an adhesive that will melt the rubber/plastic material that this panel is made of  ?

The '84 LS panel needs a repair done to it .

Mine looks perfect from the outside but when I take it off I can see it has started to split from underneath.

I guess NOW is the time to carry out a repair/reinforcement

Thanks alot for the help, everyone.. i'm fixing this while re-building my brake m. cylinder, since its all apart. Sounds like this is a common thing to happen & new housings are expensive! I'm still wondering about what adhesives to use..

I plastic welded mine from the back with a soldering iron and have reinforced it with araldite epoxy.

Well, i've embarked on a repair using aquaseal & dowels to fix this - the dowels are used as in a cabinet face frame joinery fashion, difficult because there isn't much thickness to deal with, but it seemed to work. Aquaseal is a product used to glue rubber type stuff - wetsuits etc. I use it to fix kite bladders( kitesurfing) & it works well. It will be interesting to see if & how long it works for, will report back!
