Gear linkage?

There’s more slop in the shift lever bearing on my ’84 R65 than the selector rod mechanism.  Is this normal?  Some of the parts fiche appear to show a bearing sleeve - I wonder if it's missing in my set up?  Also, it seems that the screw/bolt which holds the pivot in place might be a hex socket and it looks like there’s not enough room between it and the transmission to be able to take the pivot off without removing the transmission.  Am I missing something?  Thanks.  Mark

If the shift lever is in the way, you need to loosen up, or remove the bolt about three inches behind the left foot rest.

 After you get that loose, you can move it out of the way, you can then remove the shift lever from the transmission .

Mark, I think what Bob is saying (in a roundabout way) is to remove the L/H footpeg as the lever pivot bolt actually screws into the peg assembly!  

Depending on the year the shifter had either a little needle-bearing assembly or a bronze bushing.  I've seen both...

OK, this makes sense.  My guess is that I've got a needle bearing without needles.  I'll take a look when I'm putting my Surefoot stand on the 'bike, but this is probably three weekends away as I have a slew of business travel between now and the end of the month.  Thanks, as always, for the input.  Mark

I had a ton of slop in my shifter pedal so I replaced the needle bearing in it there is still slop but it is 80% less it helped with shifting and feel more in control.

My '81 shift lever had a bushing that was completely worn out. I located a bronze bushing at Ace Hdwr and BMW Sply and had a machine shop press it in place.

The shifter's pivot point was also worn but not near as badly as the bushing/bearing. Much better now but still some slop.
