Refinishing LS wheels
« on: May 21, 2009, 11:39:17 AM »
After many sleepless nights, great angst, and seriously contemplated therapy over Monte's stinging comments about the state of the wheels on the Junkyard Dawg I de-mounted the front and sandblasted it.  Unfortunately I ran out of sand right as I finished so Monte will need to bring me a bag of blast sand before I can do the rear!  [smiley=cheesy.gif]

I had considered blasting them and covering with clear but these LS wheels are really ugly when the paint is gone!  Seams, etc., need to be covered up.  Since the bike is not going back "original" in the paint department I decided to use Eastwood's silver Rally Wheel Paint.  Will post a pic of the sandblasted wheel when I feel like it...

Justin,

The OEM paint that is on the rims of an LS, would a chemical stripper have any effect on it, just curious .

It blasted off fairly easy so I don't think it's any kind of powder-coating or exotic epoxy or urethane stuff so I imagine stripper would work OK.  Maybe I'll try that on the rear wheel if Monte doesn't bring me any sand...  ;D

Heck Justin, if Monte doesn't bring you sand I will if you can help me blast my wheels from the ugly can job.  Then again, I may just bring you some sand because I'm such a nice guy. 8-)

You guys just kill me ;D Really...

Here's 'ol Mike, aka Bengt Phorqs, getting MARRIED on Saturday, D-Day, June 6th and all he's got on his little mind is LS rims! Wish I could be there. He sent us a very cool BMW invitation. I will send Feonce a box of ammo to help keep Mike in line. Dead man walkin'.

So glad Justin finally took the hint and is upgrading the "project" rims. They'll be so much easier on our eyes. After my successful cataract surgery I can truly say those LS rims needed an intervention.

BTW, Mike tells me the Dallas BMWMOA group is having a tech day on Saturday, June 13th, at Texas Motor Speedway. In the NASCAR garage area. I'm there. Anyone else on board?

Like I said, You guys kill me!   Monte

Monte, the jokes on you.  With the Obamunists in power these days there isn't any ammo to be had on the store shelves!  Feyonce' doesn't need any for that matter.  I'm just as meek as a lamb.  But I still draw the line when it comes to holding her purse.

With the speedo back from Overseas Speedometer today about the only thing remaining is to replace the driveshaft boot and paint the rims.  I have to admit I'm a little intimidated by the driveshaft boot chore, but with all of the knowledge and information on this forum I'm sure it will work out.

And more on the TMS techday as it develops.  Nothing is confirmed just yet.

Sure, Phorqs, grab some sand and bring 'em over I'd be more than happy to watch you blast 'em!

The boot really is not that hard, just fiddly getting that last inch on...  When I put the Dawg back together I still had the battery box out and that gave me a lot more room and I think made it quite a bit easier than with the box installed...

Oh, the Ft. Worth BMW Stealer is having some sort of open house this Saturday.  I think there's free food and last time they drew for door prizes quite regularly.  Suraklyn and I will probably be heading up there about mid morning.

Monte, you can bring my sand when you drop by...

The local shop is having an open house with breakfast and lunch.  Demo rides on all the new 1300's.  Maybe I'll see you over there.  Send me a PM or call me and we can hook up and say howdy.

I have a boot on the work bench, too. Just working up my nerve. Do we really need to replace the four 12-point bolts with new ones?

Take pics, Mike, and post 'em up for us all. I'm gonna wait and go to school on your work! Might you possibly hurry and get this done B4 the Big Day? Doubt we'll be hearing from you for awhile afterwards. Busy  ::)

Monte "got no sand" Miller

Hey, Justin. Are the regular R65 rims mfg'ed in multiple pieces parts?

Not to hijack the thread Monte, but I'll be posting some pics and commentary on my drive shaft boot project.  The consensus is, after talking to several knowledgeable folk at the beemer shop today and elsewhere, that if the four drive shaft flange bolts, the front ones, have lock washers then they should be replaced.  If they don't have lock washers then they can be reused.  You will need a 10mm 12pt spanner to break them open.

Now, we return you to the blasting and painting of the Junque Yard Dawg LS rims.... :D

That's new info to me.  I thought they had to be replaced because they are stretch bolts....

Yes, this seems contrary to my info, 'cept if they figure that the old, non-stretch type bolts with lockwashers, while re-usable, could be more likely to have a failure due to a failure in the split lockwasher compared to the stretch type bolts that need no such washer (and are too short to be installed with one).   There are plenty of folks who feel these stretch bolts are re-usable and I won't argue the point, even though I always try to get extras and use brand new bolts any time I've got to disconnect the driveshaft - I still keep the old bolts in a soup can "just in case"...
