Odometer stopped working and started again.
« on: April 18, 2009, 06:36:05 PM »
I went for a nice long ride and found that my odometer stopped (I compared it to the bike computer I have on the handlebars).  Originally, I though the bike computer had gone haywire, so I watched the odometer for a while and it didn't change at all.  Then it did.  I went right on trucking like nothing was wrong.  I didn't touch or otherwise do anything to it.  What do you think happened?

One cause of odometer malfunction is a little gear inside that slips out of contact with it's mating gear.  It sounds like yours is right on the verge!

I had this problem in my 944 and I was able to buy a new gear.  Is there any such replacement or do I have to ship it to VDO/North Hollywood Speedometer to fix it?

Unless you have a donor speedometer, parts are not available for the internal workings.

If you don't feel like going into the speedometer yourself, typical repair for this is around $180-200.

This usually includes a thorough cleaning, and recalibration.

I was bored at work about a month ago, and found a repair shop in your general area that does repairs on BMW motorcycle speedometers.

Southern Electronics in Richmond, VA.

Normally the gear just slips back and you can slide it back where it belongs and put on a drop of adhesive to help keep it put...

One of the gears slipping on the shaft is the usual cause - see:

for repairs.

Cool, thanks.  That's similar to the 944 I worked on, but looks sturdier!
