Gearbox oil leak at shifter
« on: August 04, 2010, 07:13:53 PM »
I have a slow drip oil leak coming from behind the gear shift on my 83 R65.

I went ahead and ordered part #23121338740- shaft seal from Max BMW.

Can I replace this seal by simply removing the gear shifter, etc from the exterior of the gearbox?

Or will I need to remove the gear box and get inside?

With the bike on the center stand, when you remove the shifter linkage, you'll get maybe a cup of oil out of the transmission .

You can place a drip pan under the bike to catch it .

Simple straight forward procedure to remove the seal from the outside , no need to go into the transmission .

Make sure you get the seal in straight, or you could have shifting problems .

I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

Thanks for the instructions Bob.

I gave the outer case a little heat with my heat gun, then tapped in the seal w/ a socket and rubber mallet.

Really straight forward, nice and easy! :)
