Chief Joseph rally
« on: June 03, 2007, 12:45:54 PM »
Is anybody else going?

http://www.bmwro.org/cj/index.htm

I have tentative plans to head over Friday with a fellow Airhead from Salem, OR, camp there, and return home Sunday.  If I have the clutch back in the R65 I may ride it, if not, I can take the Triumph.  He was threatening to ride his '53 Chief, but that would make for slow going as he doesn't like to ride it over 60 mph for very long.  He has an early 90s R100GSPD.

I'd love to go!  But, alas, not this year.  I have no more vacation days for now and it would take too long for me to get up and back.  But, I'm glad to hear you are going, Ed!!  Don't forget to take pictures!!!    I'd love to see what that place is like.  You can convince me into going next year with good pictures!   ;D.

Um, I don't have a camera....  Of any kind.  Maybe I can get somebody else to do it?

Ed,

Will probably come down. heck it is half of the same route to the 49'er , two weeks ago.

Look for a really scruffy looking R80G/S with 10 gallon tank and a red R65 with Rabid Transit fairing.

Ed,
Chris won't be hard to find!  Just follow the Australian accent.   ;)  He'll be right in the center of everything.

Arlies R65 is really nice looking with the Rabid Transit fairing.  I don't think you'll have trouble finding it.

Trust me, I notice Rabid Transit fairings, they tend to stand out.  I don't know if I'll have my R65 forum shirt in time for the rally, but it looks like I WILL have a new rear tire on the R65 by Thursday, so I can break it in on the way over.  It was starting to look iffy, as I noticed my Roadrunner on the Triumph is down to the wear bars at one place as well, so I don't think I would have been willing to ride it that far.  I need to try to check the tires wear more often, not just the pressure.

This should be fun.

Well I DO know that you don't have your R65 shirt anymore!  ::)
You would think people would take better care of the important stuff!  You left your dirty T-shirt and shorts in the shower when you left John Day on Sunday morning.
My wife refused to bring the shorts but we did rescue the T-shirt. Will make arrangements to mail it to you if you PM with your mailing address.
We enjoyed meeting Ed at what was a great rally with sunny weather and great local riding. Here is the picture of the man himself, when he still had his shirt.  ;D

Here is a couple of the rally site. Almost the same number at Chief Joseph this year as at the 49'er. About 820. Weather was great.

Good grief.  I hadn't even missed it yet, as I got home rather late and had to leave for work early this morning.  I'm lucky I didn't forget my bike.

I did like the rally; since it's my first I have no idea how it compares to others.  I really miss Eastern Oregon again, now.  We moved over to the west side when I was 8, but it still smells like home over there.

There were 3 R65s that I saw, all 1981s.  Mine, Arlie's (apparently well cared for by Chris, as it has something like 180,000 miles on it:  very encouraging to me), and a nice blue one owned by somebody who's name I forgot.  I told him about the forum.

I better go see what else I forgot....

Thanks Chris!

Ed!  I had no idea you were so young!  And you have a mountain cabin (with 2 mile dirt road) from which you commute to work on either the R65 or the Triumph?  Or a CRX?
I thought you were old and had an old wife and kids and all that stuff.  [smiley=ROTFLMAO.gif]

Must have been the Triumph and the Vetter fairing that threw me!  ;)

And did you see what that funholiday guy said about our gaiters! ha!

I'm only 7 years younger than you; I'll be 44 in September.  No kids.   ;D

My driveway is only about a quarter mile, but you have the vehicles right, except I sometimes drive my '58 Chevy half ton pickup if I need to haul more stuff than will fit in the CRX.

I think Chris's second picture shows the front end of Arlie's '81 R65 with it's Rapid Transit fairing, hope I'm not mistaken.  Never trust somebody who leaves his brand new R65 t shirt in the shower.   :-?

Ed is definitely a young looking 44 .... must be the 'no kids'  :-/

Will give you a better pic of the Rabid Transit.
