Gun lock secures BMW

I saw a local rice bike parked this weekend and it had this monster cable/padlock security thing wrapped through the front wheel and up around the handlebar. Not a bad idea but it would probably make a uncomfortable lump in my jeans pocket... 'cause it sure wouldn't fit in the little underseat tray. But it got me thinking...

I enjoy pistol shooting. Checked some storage boxes and found six extra gun locks. These are armored flex cable with a lock on the end. Designed to pass through the grip and breech after the clip is removed, or through the cylinder of a wheel gun; they are a good gun safety product. One of them is now assisting in the security of my R65.

Photobucket is swamped today, Saturday, so I could not upload a photo but will follow up when able. I looped the cable through the front snowflake and the area around the brake caliper. Just have to remember it's there! Could be embarassing  

The few gun shows I attend -seen one, seen 'em all- have given these away at the front door!

Well, I don't know if I would personally put too much faith in those little locks.  I've got several of them lying around the house - they seem to come with
every new firearm these days - and while they will stop a child from doing something very naughty, they don't appear to me to be able to withstand
an adult with even a moderately sized set of cutters.   Ruger issued a number of locks with their revolvers back in the early 90s, and while a child could
snap the lock/cable hard enough to spring it open, an adult could, so they were all replaced on a free basis.

A couple of companies sell a "disk-lock" that is basically just a large armored padlock that goes on your front brake rotor.   It cannot easily be removed, though
if a robber had a few guys with him and some tools and time, he could just remove the front wheel.   Still, it provides good protection against the 'casual' thief.
My major concern with it is like yours with the lock - it is small/unobtrusive enough that it could be easy to forget, and trying to ride off with that thing on would
mean a hugely embarrassing, and somewhat expensive, moment in a parking lot !

I use to lock my disc up until I read somewhere about a guy who apparently  had some experience with moving bikes without the owners knowledge. When asked about dealing with disc locks He said "Thats what skate boards are for".

You guys are really saying the same thing my grandpa said... locks keep out honest people.  The lock is but a visual deterrent. Let 'em steal the beautiful R100S that parks next to my "patina" R65.

I will note that as a newbie from the North East to the Desert gun culture I was somewhat surprised to see that disc locks were most often used not to secure the bike but to secure a weapon to the bike while the rider went into an establishment for refreshments. It is commonplace. The connection between gun locks and bikes, now that I've acclimated, seems natural.

In the car's console area is a Winchester 38spl ammo box that I use to keep Altoid mints, Kleenex, and spare change. The security rent-a-cop at school went ballistic when he saw it! I reminded him that school district policies prohibit employees from carrying concealed  weapons but there is no mention of ammo. This stumped him for several days. I eventually took pity on ol' Barney One Bullet and showed him what was in the box. He was one very relieved cat.



This is an older shot as the Cabriolet has a new top after an April hailstorm popped 50+ holes in the seven-year old vinyl. No glass or sheet metal damage. Guess the bumper sticker works...kinda.

When I was looking over my R65 prior to buying, I noticed that a spoke from the rear wheel had been somewhat crudely replaced/repaired. Suspect a forgotten cable lock.Whoops.

Let's see, since I cast my own bullets from free wheel-weights, and use a powder charge of only 4 gr., $20 would produce about....    I can shoot my .45 ACP cheaper than I can a .22!
