zxr 750 carb porblems
« on: July 31, 2007, 06:33:02 PM »
Anyone know where I can find a good expanded diagram of the carb's for a 750 zephyr. The wifes has a habit of water/crap getting in to the bowls and since there doses't appear to be any drain plugs I'm thinking of drilling and tapping them. There has to be an easier way of cleaning them than spending most of my day off stripping them from the bike, blowing them clean with an airline, before refitting and re-balancing.

A real pisser of a job that's made worse knowing that to do the same to my bimbo would take maybe an hour if I was in a rush!

Tony.

Have you entertained the idea of a fuel filter ? I did a bit of research a few months ago, and found a clear filter made by Visu-Filter, filter part number FF681-C. it uses a pleated polymerized paper element, has about 7.5 square inches ( 48 sq. c m ) of filtering area and will filter out particles down to 80 microns. Might be easier to change a filter than tear down the carbs.

the thing with those thrang is they where only sold for a 1/2 year here in the U.S. the Ford company had a problem with Kaw using the name Zephyr because they had a car that name in the earlier 80's. i have its cousin the kz and would love to have a zxr in its place, i have only seen one of these so they are not real known about or popular here.

try kzrider.com they are some real smart guys over there that some of those guys have and maintained a zephyr, bet they can help and know what you are dealing with.

I've also picked up some useful info from this kawasaki forum in the past:
http://www.kawasakimotorcycle.org/forum/

At least on my '98 Kawi Concours (GTR to you folks in Europe) I have drain screws
on the carbs, and they are quite well behaved, in general..

Well I drained the Zephyr's tank today and this is what came out of the tank. No wonder the filter kept clogging when there was the best part of a gallon of nasty looking brown sludge in the bottom of the tank. (The brown stuff in the jug was what came out)

Dude !!, that looks like the sediment in the bottom of my primary fermenter after a batch of pale ale ! That's a totally disgusting find in the bottom of your fuel tank.  I think the motorcyle maintenance police should take you in for a refresher course of motorcycle maintenance 101.;D

LOL... You're more than welcome to tell the missus that Bob! (But you're a braver man than me if you do, she used to play prop forward for Yorkshire ladies Rugby team and has a very sweet left hook!)

Although in her defence I'm told its a fairly common problem with the zephyr's tank design, but I've got to say I was pretty gob smacked when I saw just how bad the sludge was. Its no wonder that the bike was misbehaving when she was riding it back from Stormin' yesterday.

It's amazing that all you had was a little problem with the bike running ! Could you tell what exactly the sediment was comprised of ? It looks more like what you find with a bike left outside for 10 years or so.

it looks like either the surface of Mars, or a rusty sluge and feels 'bitty' when rubbed between finger and thumb (oh er missus). I've just been out to Kendal and bought some tank sealent which fingers crossed should stop it happening again.

I think part of the problem is that she only uses the bike occasionally, and it spends most winters under a cover next to the shed unlike my R65 which is daily transport year round.

Not being familiar with your bike, what design feature would lend itself to accumulate such a sediment layer ? Looks like you may need to flush the tank out on a yearly basis or so. I guess your damp climate doesn't help the situation either ! After living in a desert for the last 14 years, I have forgotten how damaging water can be to a bike. The only time either of my bikes gets wet, is when they get washed twice a year whether they need it or not. ;)

According to the bloke a Kawa Newcastle, the seal under the plate that holds the aircraft type filler cap on to the tank degrades after a few years and then lets the rain/water into the tank.
