Deltran Battery Tender Junior
« on: November 24, 2019, 02:08:19 PM »
Received an advertisement in the mail last week for a national hardware store chain, Tru Value, they have the Battery Tender Junior on sale for $20 .

Don't know if this is nationwide or just local to me .

My battery maintainers have been giving me problems for about 6 months, won't shut off on motorcycle batteries, work great on auto batteries though .

I have a "Jr" and a dual station Battery Tender and both work great.  That's an excellent price for a "real" Deltran tender.

I have a small 3A intelligent charger which is safe and works with most things I've had and does work on the R65 but! The regulator on the bike is connected at all times and will stop the charger from reaching peak (a bit higher than float voltage). So disconnect battery if using man-size charger.

I'm thinking this has to be a non standard set up as the ignition switch would normally isolate the VR from the battery.  Does the battery not run down via the charge light (if there is one) without an ignition switch isolating the charging circuit

The regulator supplies current to the alternator armature only. It is activated by the power from the ignition light. It can't affect the charger on the battery.

Interesting. The bike is charging properly and not discharging, but I've never seen my smart charger be cut off, suddenly drop and then start to build voltage again.

Looking at the diagram, I'm not sure how the regulator could affect the battery voltage directly either! That is if all the diodes are OK.
