Learned A Valuable Lesson On My Guzzi Today

I was on my way to work this morning, the Guzzi started coughing, witched the fuel taps to reserve position engine ran great .
I had 9 miles to work and then 11 miles home, 20 miles, no problem .
Well got to within 2 blocks form home in a left turn lane at an intersection, engine quits no warning .
Got the bike onto the side walk  pushed to a parking lot about 100 feet away .
Walked home got a 1 gallon furl container put .5 gallons in it .
A co-worker pulls up in front of my house, he saw me pushing the bike, takes me back to my bike .
Put the fuel in and amazingly the engine runs with fuel in the tank . 
Embarassing way to start my weekend . 
What little defense I have about this, this is the first time the bike has gone on reserve since I started riding it 6 years ago .
So what did I learn, 20 mile reserve fuel range, not the 20.25 miles I needed today !!
