I like the "nothing" tool but I ended up using a really tiny flat-blade jewelers screwdriver.
Slip it down between the metal plug and the block, then push the two (usually) locking tabs into the body of the metal connector. Push the wire out of the block in the direction of the male/female end.
What I was doing was cleaning any dirt, grit and/or corrosion out of the terminals.
