« on: December 05, 2006, 07:27:01 PM »

hopefully that is the right link and the item i need is number 10.
i have the code but when i called bob's bmw they really didnt know what i was talking about.  anyone know of any place that can cut me a key for these bags if i have the code?  the code is 061 if that helps.

I know what you're talking about, but unfortunately probably most dealerships these days won't.  I checked the part number on BMWNAs site and they show it as NLA (no longer available).  061 is the code you need, but I'm not sure where you could find one these days.  I remember when we used to keep a whole ring full of all the different keys coded in the parts room - not anymore.  We had a guy come in a couple of weeks ago needing the same thing and my parts guy didn't have a clue.  Someone suggested to this fellow to try a luggage shop.  Don't know if he had any luck with that or not.

The only other suggestion, which is not a good one by any means - only as a last resort, is to swap out the entire latch with the updated ones that you can use the same key as the ignition.  Very expensive alternative I would say...   ::)

Try a luggage shop and let us know if you have any success.

(Did you try Blue Moon?  I would think John would have an idea...)

Hi,
Rich came to our forum http://www.kleineboxer.de/ in germany and invited us to yours (http://kleine-boxer.redeker.net/viewtopic.php?p=32461&highlight=#32461)... So here I am.

Well over here in germany this would be no problem. Because the BMW dealer (we call them the fiendly dealer or short  :) because of his "friendly" prieces which empty your wallet in no time...) you can order the key by number. And it is (really a rare occasion) not that expensive. The last key I bought (some time ago) was something like 3€ (4$). I might be a bit more expansive now but still more affordable than a new set of "case catches" or even new bags. As an alternative there are "case catches" for these bags which use the same key as the ignition. They where used on the GS models an also fit to these bags (http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=0481&mospid=47933&btnr=46_0101&hg=46&fg=20) see No. 4 for the catch. The locking cylinder (is that the right word) use is the same as in the new touring bags for the R100R or so an you can set the keycode yourself.
If there is no way to order it in the US we could try to find out if it is possible for me to get one and send it over to you. The biggest problem probably is the money transfer...

Yep, that's a good part number.  BMWNA shows none in stock and none on order, but it does NOT show it as NLA.  That means you should be able to order it from your local dealer.  It would come from Germany, so expect a wait for it.  Depending on the parts sometimes they come fairly quickly, sometimes not.  Retail price at BMWNA is listed at $3.60.

I'm going to file that part number away.  I'm sure the other coded keys have numbers adjacent.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've also found another part number with the same description "SDL BAG KEY-061" #51 25 0 418-971.  It retails for $6.00.  I would try ordering the first number you found and if that doesn't work, try the 2nd.  They both show as still available, but none in the states.  (Unless you just happen to find a dealer that has some old stock, of course...)

Chicago BMW also shows this part #, see link below. They're usually really good (if somewhat slow) about getting odd parts.

that key part number is only for the bags with 061 code.  thanks though for looking it up for me. i just got done with a 14 hour day of land surveying and didnt have any time to call a dealer. go to snowbums website under the locks and keys section and he has the part number breakdowns for all the keycodes.
here is the direct link:
http://pweb.jps.net/~snowbum/locks_caps_etc.htm
and here is the link to his whole site:
http://home.jps.net/~snowbum/techindex.htm
i think i may be in love with his website.

These keys are not that complicated.  They just flip a little toggle inside the lock to lock and unlock.  The different keys have different profiles to fit through different shaped slots (keyway) in the locks that the key goes through, then the lock is the same inside.  Only the first little finger closest to the tip does anything - the rest of the key is for show.  (Does that make sense?)  Anyway, when I got my R65 I only got 1 key and it was bent.  The dealer told me to go to a luggage repair shop.  The luggage shop I went to was a really good one and they found a key that was the right basic shape and were willing to grind it down, but it turned out that because it was thinner than the stock key, it fit through the slot in they keyway with no modification.  Then I got my R80RT, which had different key numbers on each saddlebag because the prior owner had replaced one bag when it fell off on the highway (they do that - add velcro tot eh saddlebag frame just in case), I found out that it fit them as well.  Anyway, I have made additional universal keys from old steak knives on the grinder.  It just has to have the two little fingers at right angles - the  finger to flip the toggle and the finger that the key rotates around.

Bob's sent me a 051 & 052 in June..for my touring bags.  One key was $3.79, the other was $6.59
The part numbers were 51250418961  & 62.

This from their receipt.

Would have thought the part numbers would have ended with 051 & 052, but go figure.

True, *but* — There might be slightly less expense if the current touring-case locks fit your older cases. When I bought new touring cases at Bob's last year, I bought a pair of locks for them. The pair was keyed when installed (I think they were pre-keyed as a pair, but I'm not positive.) The pair wasn't cheap, but I don't remember the price being a killer, either. Of course, that solution requires putting up with the PITA factor of not keying the new locks to your present ignition lock, or (shudder) buying a complete new set — ignition, seat lock, and touring case locks.

since you are talking about keys, maybe someone can help me. I have krauzer side bags and i have code number but I don't have key/s. where to look for the key in europe since bags are 28 years old and most of the people who were making them have probably gone to paradise long time ago.

thanks in advance for any answer
