US Route 66

Saw this article on Yahoo this morning .

US Route 66 officially disapeared, or decertified, on this day in 1986, when the last section was bypassed by interstate highway .

Ridden and driven the section of Route 66 that still exists in northern Aridzona numerous times in the last 21 years, since moving to the Phoenix area in October, 1993 .

Kinda wonder how the trip was back in the 1930's, when people were escaping the misery of the ' Dust Bowl ' and the great depression .

Headed for the ' promised land ' California .

I've ridden a few stretches of the original Route 66 in Oklahoma. Sometimes it's necessary to do a little off-roading to find the original highway's surface.

Bump a couple generations forward and many of those former Dust Bowl residents of that Promised Land are now heading the other way.  Toyota is pulling outta Cali due to high taxes and a few other concerns. Moving to the DFW area -Frisco, Texas, IIRC. Toyota trucks have been built in Ol' San Antone for many years.

We just returned from a week in the Texas Hill Country. We enjoy a nice hotel in Blanco, Texas where the daytime front desk guy, Tony, shared with us that he has been married and divorced FOUR times! Six daughters and twelve granddaughters but no boys. Said he went bust buying hair spray, tampons and toilet paper.

Tony now lives in a 30-foot travel trailer... alone.

I don't know what it's called elsewhere, but that in Texas, is  ' tornado bait ' !!!!!!

To get back on topic, I am planning on trip to Santa Fe this September or October, and I hope to do some stretches of old Route 66 between St. Louis and Santa Fe.  Are there any "must see" stretches or sights on old Route 66 that I will be near?

Couple possible stops on Old Route 66 in Oklahoma, if you like motorcycles.

Northeast of Tulsa is the Route 66 Vintage Iron Motorcycle Museum.

In Warwick OK -north of Shawnee OK- there's the very cool Seaba Station Motorcycle Museum. Our ride to Seaba was well worth the time. Excellent bike collection from early 1900's to 20th century. Plus a bit of AMA Nat'l Champion and Oklahoman #9 Gary Nixon memorabilia. The restored building itself is like a time machine.

Are there any "Whiting Brothers" service stations left on the great road?

That's my most vivid memories of the "great road", ahh yes and the Burma Shave signs and the millions of signs telling us the "THING" was just a few miles more. I still remember the smells of the lil motels littering the roadside........... Those were the days
