Interesting timing, Lou.

I'm just now finishing S.C. Gwynne's marvelous book, Empire of the Summer Moon - Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History. Mean muthas, Comanches were.

Your lantern-lit night encampment photograph is spot on. Hope y'all had scouts posted out as night sentries. Comanche bait you be.

Many of the Texas Comanche raids were just 75-100 miles west of my present home in Denton and occurred as late as the mid-1870s.

Great book, Empire of the Summer Moon.  Be sure to read On The Border With Mackenzie as well.  During the War of Northern Aggression when all the US troops left Texas, most of the Texas Rangers joined the CSA, there was a dearth of defenders in Commancheria.  The advance of settlement was pushed back at least 100 miles with the line of demarcation pretty much reflecting the current I-35W corridor.  The route of the Butterfield Stage Line ran within about an arrow flight of Monte's Planet Parkside abode.

A companion to the two aforementioned books is "The Way To Rainy Mountain", the story of the Kiowa tribe.

I have just finished "On the Border"  an interesting book, i dont know if either of you have come across "The Long Death" by R K Andrist a very interesting insight to the Plains Indians from their point of view.
I found it on a flea market in Amsterdam on one of my cultural visits.

I understand red light does not disrupt your ability to "read" in the dark. ;D

Texas singer-songwriter Jerry Jeff Walker sings a tune about crossing the Rio Grande "for a little cultural exchange."

I'm sure Lou is familiar with Jerry Jeff.

Seems my education is incomplete, i havent heard of Jerry Jeff....
we used to go to Amsterdam twice a year but the last time i was there was for the "Tall Ships" sailing event in 2005 when to my dismay all the best "Dutch" bars had been replaced by plastic money traps which are completely uninviting.
The red light district is entertaining in its own way, wife and i were walking from Dam square to the New Church district (nice cafes/bars etc) as we walked passed a row of "windows" i was accosted by one of the "Ladies" whose window was open due to the heat, i responded by "do you mind i am with my wife" she retorted "not a problem love she can watch"............... happy daze......
