Well, I must admit that my R65 sat neglected for a while. About 22 months, to be precise. I got lazy, since I had another airhead that runs just fine. I have repaired the '83 R65, and have been riding it a lot for a month or so. I really love many of its characteristics -- in many ways I prefer it over my 1975 R90S. I hope you guys will let me back on the forum. I repent!
The larger, and much more accurate speedometer is a real plus. After getting two speeding tickets on the R90S last summer, I really need to know just how fast I'm going. Those separate turn signal indicator lights are nice, too. The switch is a lot more sensible, too. Having the choke up on the handlebar is sure easier. The R65 is definitely more "flickable." Shorter wheelbase, 22 pounds lighter, and narrower tires all contribute, I would guess. I can push steer it from one lean angle to the other more quickly when in the twisties. I remember Rob giving me a hard time about my big U.S. spec handlebars, but I really prefer them to the short little ones on the R90S. I told my wife that between the two bikes, the R65 is definitely a more comfortable ride. Honestly, the acceleration is fairly close to the larger 900 cc, too. On Saturday I buried that 85 mph speedometer a few times, while keeping one eye in my rearview mirror. Another speeding ticket could give me a "point" here in California, and cost me on my insurance.
Anyway, here's my first post, so Justin can rest assured that I'm not a spammer. I look forward to learning more, and contributing when I can. My thanks to Snowbum's site for helping me with piston removal and replacement, and valve setting. He has tips that definitely help over the Clymer or Haynes manuals. I'm proud to have gotten it back together on my own.
I'll see you guys out on the road.
