I'm back in the fold
« on: September 22, 2008, 11:09:56 PM »
Well, I must admit that my R65 sat neglected for a while.  About 22 months, to be precise.  I got lazy, since I had another airhead that runs just fine.  I have repaired the '83 R65, and have been riding it a lot for a month or so.  I really love many of its characteristics -- in many ways I prefer it over my 1975 R90S.  I hope you guys will let me back on the forum.  I repent!

The larger, and much more accurate speedometer is a real plus.  After getting two speeding tickets on the R90S last summer, I really need to know just how fast I'm going.  Those separate turn signal indicator lights are nice, too.  The switch is a lot more sensible, too.  Having the choke up on the handlebar is sure easier.  The R65 is definitely more "flickable."  Shorter wheelbase, 22 pounds lighter, and narrower tires all contribute, I would guess.  I can push steer it from one lean angle to the other more quickly when in the twisties.  I remember Rob giving me a hard time about my big U.S. spec handlebars, but I really prefer them to the short little ones on the R90S.  I told my wife that between the two bikes, the R65 is definitely a more comfortable ride.  Honestly, the acceleration is fairly close to the larger 900 cc, too.  On Saturday I buried that 85 mph speedometer a few times, while keeping one eye in my rearview mirror.  Another speeding ticket could give me a "point" here in California, and cost me on my insurance.

Anyway, here's my first post, so Justin can rest assured that I'm not a spammer.  I look forward to learning more, and contributing when I can.  My thanks to Snowbum's site for helping me with piston removal and replacement, and valve setting.  He has tips that definitely help over the Clymer or Haynes manuals.  I'm proud to have gotten it back together on my own.

I'll see you guys out on the road.

Nowt much wrong with your bikes though.

Welcome.  But I think once you have a R65, you never really leave them.

We may have to take a secret vote to decide whether or not to let you back into the "inner-sanctum", though...  Do you have the fairing for your "S"?

Justin -- yeah, I know it is weird, but I have the optional little bikini fairing on my R65, but no fairing on my R90S.  I have a brand new fairing for it, also painted Daytona Orange, from S. Meyer in Germany, but I prefer to run the bike without it.  I also have a cosmetically challenged "S" fairing that came on the bike.  My R90S has about 180,000 miles on it, and isn't a beauty/trailer queen.

BTW, the old style "peanut" rocker covers that I have on my R65 also came from S. Meyer (alteteile2003 on eBay).  I prefer that look.  I have a nice folding key in the R65 that I got from you in January of '06.  I used to post as Peter in So Cal on the old forum.  The question looms -- will Rob Valdez forgive my transgressions and accept me back?

I dunno, Rob can be kinda cranky sometimes.  Me, I just try to stay medicated...  I've got over 100k on my '81 R100 with a fresh top-end rebuild at 91k so it should make it that far as long as I live long enough. :P

Rob may be a bit cranky, but don't worry about him.  He's probably forgotten.   ;)   The rest of us will accept you back.   8-)  I remember your name.  Can't remember what part of So Cal you're from though.  If you go to the 49er Rally next spring maybe we can get some other R65 owners there and have a bit of a West Coast gathering.

I like your bikes.  I've got an '83 also.  Those "peanut" rocker covers look great.  If I were more into making it look "perty" I just might get those too.  Alas, I have too many places for my money to go and that's not a high priority right now.  Now the right little fairing is another matter.

I like the little "bikini" fairing.  How well does that work to keep the wind off your body?  I'd like to try something a little different on mine to keep the wind going up rather than through me.   ::)

Welcome back!   [smiley=beerchug.gif]

Welcome Peter!  I think I remember you too! Didn't you post a pic of yourself before?  Love the look of both bikes and it's nice to hear that the R65 isn't much slower than a 900cc.
1983 R65LS - LRB still my favourite!? 1988 Honda NX250, "Toodles Too" and a Suzuki DR650, "Calypso." All stored in the "Brrrmmm Closet".

Welcome back,  I hope them let me back in too.  Although I have only negleted the web site, my bike is my daily ride.  Until today anyway.  the ignition coils finally gave out, will be replacing them with the Dyna 'brown' as soon as it arrives.
