Thanks, Lou. Since the Cowboys imploded, I don't have a favorite. Just hope the game is entertaining.

Our Soldier has two weeks before wheels in the well; back to the 'stan. Five tours so far. Good thoughts to your friends boys.

Sigh.  Another superbowl where my favorite team didn't win, and lost to my wife's favorite team, the NY Giants;   It's a good thing that we went out Saturday night for dinner - she may be holding this over my head for some time.

Being a Rugby person I actually watched the S.uperbowl today but have a few questions:
1. Why do they call it football if they hardly ever kick the ball?
2. Whats with all the Motorcycling gear, as in body armour, helmets , gloves etc?
3. How many players do they have on a team? - It looks like one hell of a lot to me.
Answers would really be appreciated

Well a very entertaining game even if the "wrong" team won, i could not support anyone  who beat the Cowboys... the yard stick for a good game is when the wife starts snoring.... it didnt finish until 3am here and the wife made it to the end.
The half time show was better than i expected if a bit long, Madge has been taking alot of stick from an old puff just latley but there is life in the old girl yet.
Bali if you watched the 6 Nations rugby this weekend there were harder hits with no protective gear... we have a saying
Give Blood..... play Rugby lol
I hate to think what the wage bill is for these teams and perhaps someone can let us know how many players are allowed, that said stupidly having too many players on the pitch at a key play cost the Pats the game... a basic schoolboy  error that sould not happen at this level.
Tickets are on sale today for the Pats game in London in October, i have a green light to get some from SWMBO but dont know if i can bear a visit to London i would rather have my teeth pulled than spend time in the capitol.

Each team has 53 players on its roster for yesterday's game, which is typical/  There are usually 2-3 players for every position, sometimes more, given that there can be significant 'attrition' throug the course of the season.  The salaries for each team's players varies , and the football league is not setup with the franchise salary caps that the baseball leagues are - though even the baseball league team's vary ALOT - it is a mysterious formula that dictates their limit, to be sure.

Rugby was starting to become a little more popular over here when I was in university, but I didn't play it more than a few occasional weekends with some non serious friends.   I enjoyed soccer(football to the rest of the world) quite a bit, and I can say that there we had alot less of the 'swan-dive' performances than we see in the world cup matches these days.   My friends who played rugby easily kept the local pharmacy in business for bandages, medication and plast casts/splints.

I guess the thing about rugby, in my view, though there are some pretty big guys out there on the rugby field, and anyone can get hit pretty hard without protection, they all have to be able to do some running, etc. and the big guys aren't as ridiculously HUGE as the linemen on these american football teams.   If I had 5 or 6 of these 350+ pounders all lunging for me at the same time, I'd want some padding and a helmet!

It is very difficult to be a sports fan from New England unless you expect that you will most likely be humiliated when any championship  game is involved. Oh the misery of being down 9-0 in the first quarter with a touch back! Now a touch back is somewhat rare...But when Brady threw the ball into a vast empty space in the mid field I just knew we were in for trouble. It was a perfect example of the self destructive power of a Boston Team [smiley=wall.gif] D2

Lou,
"Give Blood..... play Rugby" quite funny.
We also have a saying where I come from:
'No pads, no helmets, just balls!'
