LS fuel mileage figures
« on: September 22, 2008, 09:43:07 PM »
I was thinking that my '82 R65LS was running just a tiny bit on the lean side, but after taking it out for a brief 55 mile loop yesterday, it really seems to be running pretty well.   I even went up some steep mountain roads in top gear, and intentionally opened up the throttle without downshifting, to see if I could detect any pinging/detonation.  Even with the  cheap, no-name gas of 87 octane in the tank, she didn't emit so much as a single "ping", and managed to accelerate up the mountain in 5th, though obviously not at a tremendous rate.   Checking my fuel mileage at the gas station for the past 99 miles on the odometer, I averaged 47.5 MPG !   Maybe it could still stand to be running ever so slightly more rich, but it seems to be operating pretty darn good at the moment !

How are you all doing for fuel mileage on your bikes ?   My average trip is probably longer than most people's - usually 40-50 miles one way, and I generally stick to the back roads mostly with the R65, so the speeds are generally 60 MPH or less.

As great as it seems, my 110 HP Kawasaki Concours with a big fairing, bags, and 1000cc's worth of 4 cylinders also tends to average 47-48 MPG, as long as I don't
crank on the throttle toooo hard and keep the speedometer on the low side of 75 MPH.

Why is it you think you are running lean?  Plugs white?  The best Barbara has gotten on her '84 was right at 48 mpg - all interstate at around 65 mph...  Suraklyn got over 50 mpg on his '05 R1200ST during break-in, I guess FI isn't all evil.  I don't think he's been very easy on it since, though, and the mpg has declined accordingly.  ::)

Plugs are kinda white, or ever so slightly tan/off-white - I generally never get them to appear quite so clean on any of my other engines.  Maybe I've got a very slight air-leak somewhere and the mixture is otherwise right on.  Or maybe I just should stop looking for trouble and just ride, baby ride !

Last time I checked my gas mileage was on the trip up to the Gathering of the Clans and I got 51 mph both on the trip up and home.  The best I've ever gotten! I like it!  8-)

I've been getting between 54 and 62 mpg (Imperial Gallon)... so between 44 and 52 if I measure it against your weenie gallon. :)

I'm not bothered by our weenie gallons.  It's our weenie pints that bug me!

I've been keeping an accurate record of gallons burned and miles covered on my 1981 R65. With some Ranch Road rides and a buncha city riding, I'm seeing 41 - 47 mpg.

My 1986 Cabriolet, with 225k, gets about 30 mpg.

Filled up my bride's Deville Touring Sedan in Austin this weekend for 3.49 gallon. Granddaughter's first birthday. Couldn't miss it!  The DTS Northstar averaged 24.3 mpg over 623 miles.

My Ford F150 300-inch straight six with a Mazda 5-speed gets 15 mpg on the highway... on it's best days!

I love my Boxer  ;D

Both of my R100s get a little over 40 riding with "spirited" riding and around 44 out on the highway...
